My husband pointed out an unusual duck for #MallardMonday. I don't know if its parents were a #mallard and a domestic duck or something else, possibly a Northern Pintail...? We thought the rich brown colour made him stand out in a crowd! #birds #photography #EastCoastKin

Sweet lil South Georgia boy #birds

Male downy woodpecker perched on the end of a broken branch, facing up and to the right. “Our smallest woodpecker,” as Sibley puts it, has a white belly and black wings flecked in white. His black crown and black eye line mark his otherwise white head, but let’s not forget that sweet red patch near his nape. He is floofed out and may be a first-year bird. Also his beak is short and black and cute. The background is unfocused bright green foliage.

Little blue heron, not blue #birds

Little blue heron standing on a pile of twisted branches. Despite her name, every feather on this bird is white. The bird’s back is to the camera and her head is turned to the right. She is a tall wading bird with long yellow-green legs and an S-shaped neck and a daggerlike bill. Some webby stuff, perhaps a spider web, clings to her beak, which is pale with a dark tip.

Looking out over the city of Istanbul at the golden hour. Several of the buildings are orange with dark red roofs. Beyond is the Bosphorus Strait and more of the city on the other side. The sky is darkening, so it’s a hazy, brownish blue.

I spent some time with the young Agami Herons yesterday at Agami Island #costarica

So many youngsters are still around the colony, busy fishing in the canals. The adults are long gone now and the kids are own their own.
