It just has its own grammar. It just does a dozen mad things on every page.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
If this moment doesn't move you, it's as simple as this: you have lived your life wrong.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
After everything we've seen, all the colour and madness, it's original Superman not being able to find Lois that hits hardest.

He exists but she never did, and his *anguish*, the instinctive reaction he has to just become nothing rather than this, and the fact *he's saved by Superman*.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
And, yeah, when I think of the momentous news of my mid-eighties, it's Live Aid, Challenger, Chernobyl, and the multiverse reborn as one Earth.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
I usually hate 'the whole universe will be destroyed' stories, cos *nah* Batman will still be punching the Joker three months from now. CoIE has the advantage of being first to market, but it really sells and delivers that scale of threat.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
It's been worn smooth by time, repetition, imitation, and definitionally futile attempts to one-up ot, but *hot damn* just the TITLE 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' is incredible, isn't it?

'Establish your stakes'. Literally everything is at stake.

Perfect pulp SFF framing.

Don't make me tap the Robert Pattinson quote, Leto.
“I always say about people who do method acting, you only ever see people do the method when they’re playing an assholes,” Pattinson said in an interiew with Variety in November. “You never see someone being lovely to everyone while they’re really deep in character.”

'It's not from a sewer main, Watson, that is a blowpipe'.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
Holmes' eyes lit up at that. 'Fuck YEAH,' he ejaculated. 'Watson, grab your suitcase and horsewhip, we're doing this.'
lanceparkin.bsky.social
Holmes listened as Miss Stoner told her tale of an abusive father, her sister dying just before coming into her inheritance, despite fearfully barring her room so the only way in was a small ventilation grille, how she had been crushed to death in her bed, and her last words had been 'silver blaze'.

I now realize that for my entire adult life, I've had a very narrow conception of what "supporting and defending the Constitution" means. Standing on business when armed agents of the State are knocking on your door is way more important, by a country mile, than anything I did overseas

Border Patrol “attempted to arrest a plumber working inside a Logan Heights home but left empty-handed after the homeowner refused them entry.

The homeowner told agents she would not allow them inside because the warrant they presented did not include her address and lacked a judge's signature.”
Federal immigration operations target San Diego neighborhoods, sparking community resistance
Federal immigration agents conducted operations in Logan Heights and Southeast San Diego on Friday, with community members capturing footage of the enforcement actions.

Also, wasn't sure when the book was set, but the book helpfully pinned it down to 'shortly after September 6th 1986'.

I am reading a book * in which the main character has named her favourite Beatles song and it's such a bad choice ** that it feels like a plot point, like it's foreshadowing that she's wrong about other stuff, too.

* Katabasis, RF Kuang
** Mr Postman

Merry Dog Carcass In Alley Day to all who celebrate.

Happy 40th Anniversary of Rorschach seeing the city‘s true face to those who celebrate
The first panel of the comic “Watchmen.”

On the top of the panel, text reads “Rorschach’s Journal. October 12th, 1985. Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.”

The rest of the panel depicts an extreme closeup of a city street where a pool of blood runs off into a gutter. On the edge of the gutter there is a yellow smiley face button marred by a single drop of blood that partially obscures one eye.

If I had a penny for every terfy 'thinker' who always had something a bit wrong with their brain, took stuff that made it worse, but lately they went off the deep end after coming into contact with something that eats brains, I'd have nearly $1, which doesn't sound like much, but it's all of them.

It works because no one actually likes, or needs to like, their politicians.
lanceparkin.bsky.social
The thing with US politics is how cynically the GOP just take their candidates' weaknesses and say that's the other guy.

They got away with painting *Kerry* as the war coward, not W. Which was absurd. They haven't looked back.

... and, as you say, it only works because it reinforces an existing belief or prejudice, or it stretches things only a little.

Yeah, I think a lot of it is a conscious exploit / cultivation of:

1. People only read the headline.

2. Natural tendency to think 'both sides are as bad as each other'.

We haven't picked ourselves up from 2008, yet, but the now-inevitable AI crash will be four times the size.
histoftech.bsky.social
“Concerns over an AI bubble bursting have grown lately, with analysts recently finding that it’s 17 times the size of the dotcom-era bubble and four times bigger than the 2008 financial crisis.”

Hang onto your butts. This “correction” is gonna hurt.
