Times are tough. Between furloughs and people working but not receiving paychecks combined with cuts to vital programs that help feed the most vulnerable in our communities, it really takes a toll. Seeing laughing emojis on posts about SNAP cuts and hearing the fear in people's voices who have never needed food banks but need help now hurts our hearts. Our staff has shed some tears over some of the things we've seen and heard lately. But the silver lining is the overwhelming kindness that always seems to show up when things get really hard. It always does. We have had so many phone calls and emails these last few weeks from people asking how they can help—more than we can count. We are so fortunate to have so much kindness directed our way.

And speaking of kindness, one of our employees was at the grocery store today purchasing food for our senior grocery program as we were running low. She let a man with just a few items go ahead of her in line. When he asked what all of the groceries were for, she told him it was to help feed local senior citizens through our food bank. He instantly put $300 towards her purchase. There were more tears as she shared this with our staff when she returned. But these tears were happy ones. Kindness is there. It's always there somewhere. It's the light in the dark. It's those who call to see what the food bank needs when the shelves are starting to look bare. It's the friends and neighbors who check in on you to make sure you're doing OK. It's the generous person in front of you—completely by chance—in the check out lane you just happened to choose. To that generous man today at the grocery store and to all who are stepping up to make sure our neighbors are taken care of during these difficult times, thank you. Your kindness truly means so much. We feel the love from our community. And we sure hope those we are privileged to be able to serve feel it, too.
