My ex helped build "PACA", and was part of the crew when she went tits-up trying to beat the trans-Mediterranean record.
He helped rescue a Breton team-member who (gulp) couldn't swim. Helicopters, the whole nine yards..

It was a cool time to be involved with such a high profile event. I met and spoke with Dennis numerous times, even saw the America's Cup trophy in his office after he won it back from Australia. Big, gaudy thing lol

I can tell you it's a hell of a rush to be 35' up on a flying hull doing freeway speeds (50 knots) in a 25 knot wind!

Stars and Stripes cost $15 million, had carbon fiber hulls and kevlar sails.

This is the America's Cup catamaran "Stars and Stripes", skippered by Dennis Conner. My wife used to do the accounting for Dennis' business in San Diego, and he took us out for a ride after they defeated the Kiwis in 1988.
