It's interesting to see the different book standards. Japanese novels tend to be small because Japanese is *dense*. My Japanese copy of "Mother Night" is about 30% the volume of my English edition, but the English would be unreadable at that size.

Dutch, on the other hand, makes books grow by 50%.

On a related note, this is why I always advise people to start with foreign language novels by reading translations of their native language. That way, you get all the new words and grammar in a familiar context.

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

At this point, my neighbourhood is isolated. Risky to try to make it out in a 4WD. Even our normal emergency path through the nudist colony is blocked, so either they are pissed at the county or Cline Creek is full on their ingress side.

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?
