My mother used to say, "a cat can look at a king", which my father said meant, "hold your head high, and never bow down to anybody." Words to live by. :) Transparency zone: Name - Bernice Brooks Location - Port Stephens, Australia

Well said. The narrow scope of view that prevails in economic thinking in Australia is a curse

No economy can be considered "strong" when a growing number are being left behind

I find it really disappointing to hear one of the very few politicians who I would have any trust in, accepting neoliberal economic nonsenses like budget deficits

What he wants here is the answer to inequity & corruption, nothing to do with any mythical Federal Government Deficit

The proper remedy to our budget deficit is not triming spending, it’s to increase revenue. 1) Have multinationals pay their fair share of tax. 2) Collect proper royalties for our (finite) resources. 3) Stop just exporting our rocks - value add here. 4) Stop Defence waste. #auspol

AOC: You're damn right that it's a Democratic priority to keep people from getting poisoned, from dangerous chemicals

You're damn right that it's a Democratic priority to bring down the cost of housing

If they want to say that that's a Democratic priority, they're right,

The onus for stopping a genocide is on the party committing the genocide. The onus is not on the victims of the genocide to end it by meeting certain conditions. This should not even need to be said.

The Onus Is On Israel And Its Allies To End The Genocide, Not Their Victims

Finally, some common sense from Oklahoma education.

Ryan Walters turned classrooms into culture war battlegrounds. Reversing his Bible mandate isn’t “anti-religion,” it’s accepting the fact that the Bible is not a history book!

Schools should teach, not preach.

and you’re saying Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, Smotrich & co (they put the last IDF head in place) care about Israeli citizens?
Who’s the laughing stock (though this is really not a matter for laughing!)

did you know that

THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
"We later found out that Hamas had offered on October 9 or 10 to release all the civilian hostages in exchange for the IDF not entering the Strip, but the government rejected the offer."

A sign-off for this spring and summer, with all its critters, bugs, snakes, caterpillars, fireflies and plants. What a show. I’ve never regretted rewilding or letting nature take over ❤️‍🩹

This lady allowed a closeup, very cool about me waving my camera near it ❤️ Who doesn’t love brown-eyed Susan’s ❤️🙏 One day I realized that Star-Leaved Aster, a rare NE plant had just up and settled in my garden on its own… the cheek! One of the over 20 native bee species we observed in our rewilding garden and its Goldenrod. I like neighborly bees 🐝

Donald Trump longs for European recognition, and by rights it'll come in the form of an ICC war crimes trial at The Hague, rather than a Nobel Peace Prize.

Israel's closure of the Rafah border is a deliberate retaliation tied to delays in the return of deceased hostages.

And as such, it constitutes collective punishment against a civilian population - a war crime under international law.

Exclusive: Hamas says Israel’s ‘indiscriminate’ destruction of Gaza behind delay in locating captives' bodies
A Hamas source says that, along with 10,000 Palestinians still under the rubble, locating the bodies of captives requires 'time and effort'

In the finance world, unrealised gains are real enough to collect fees on, to boast about in their client reports, and to trigger performance bonuses.

But mention taxing unrealised gains, and suddenly they're not real.

The taxability of income, it seems, depends on whose income it is.

Senator Price is mistaken when she refers to a "longer version" of the Uluru Statement.

The Uluru Statement is a single page framed by Indigenous artwork and adorned with the signatures of numerous First Nations representatives who participated in the National Constitutional Convention.

Senator Price would do well to — how you say — stop relitigating the past and being divisive. These actions are, we've often been told, un-Australian. As her side of the aisle loves to say, "what's happened has happened", so let's "move on" #auspol
Copy of the first page of Senator Jacinta Namijinpa Price's statement on the 2nd anniversary of Australia's referendum on an Indigenous Voice to the Parliament. Alt text for the statement itself is withheld on purpose, as an editorial judgement. Tweet by Jacinta Nampijinpa @ @JNampijinpa

STATEMENT - VOICE REFERENDUM 2nd
ANNIVERSARY
When millions of Australians resoundingly rejected the Voice referendum two years ago, their decision preserved our values and democracy.
A constitutionally enshrined Voice was far from a

The spectacle of a former government cabinet minister dragging a rape victim through multiple courts will undoubtedly deter people from reporting sexual assault.

Linda Reynolds' vindictiveness is Dickensian - she reminds me of Madame Defarge, utterly consumed by the pursuit for vengeance.

The "show-your-papers" policy sure feels ominous, even from the safe distance of another country.

It's not a direct equivalent to 1930s Germany - not yet, anyway - but it seems designed to instil fear by normalising surveillance and vulnerability, particularly for people in marginalised groups.
