Why FFMV sucks. Another installment in a never ending series.

Yep, it’s crazy, it’s devoid of evidence based decisions, it’s ‘out of sight - out of mind’ and it’s all too common across Victoria.

‘Fuel reduction burning’ is a perfect example of thinking in words - empty words. The practice has little relation to reality on the ground.

Just so we’re clear: Labor is choosing to work with the worst possible party on environmental issues, instead of the Greens and teals who actually want environmental regulation.
And Watt is already admitting it won’t have a climate trigger …
Watt nears deal with Coalition to finally overhaul environment laws
Environment Minister Murray Watt will sit down with his Liberal counterpart Angie Bell today, with quiet optimism in both parties that a deal might soon be struck to finally rewrite Australia's "broke...

The edges of this tree-hollow and the branch next to it have been worn smooth by what must be generations of #possums coming and going.
The tree is a pencil pine - one of #Tasmania's endemic treasures. These slow-growing mountain giants can live for 1000 years. That's a lot of possums. 🌲 #trees
A tree trunk with a large hole in it, above a roaring river. The edges of the bottom of the entrance to the tree-hollow, and the branch immediately outside of, are a smooth peachy brown, in contrast to the grey brown of the rest of the wood

📣 #BREAKING: We’ve settled our case against Australia’s Environment Minister!

Backed by our supporters & represented by Environmental Justice Australia, we took bold legal action to fight for threatened species, and won! #auspol #wildoz

‘The philosopher Judith Butler and the Middle East historian Ussama Makdisi are perhaps the only two notified people who have spoken publicly about the email they received. Butler sees the silence of the others as a sign of fear.’

I interviewed historian @emmashortis.bsky.social on the particulars of American fascism, comparisons with Nazism, the global crisis of democracy, and Australia's options. None of this is particularly cheery stuff, but you might find some clarity in it.

In 2021, Greenpeace looked in depth at all the current forest certification schemes.

It called PEFC 'a weak and industry-dominated certification scheme, especially in comparison to the FSC'.

No state native forest logging agency has been able to obtain FSC certification.

Then we have a director of merchandise at Bunnings saying this: PEFC-certified forests indicate sustainable management.

Well, that's a big claim.
'Cam Rist, Bunnings director of merchandise, said it sold tree ferns and "tree ferns products" that were salvage harvested, as well as ones grown from spores.

He said their policy was to only sell Tasmanian tree ferns salvaged from PEFC-certified forests, indicating sustainable management.'

There is simply no evidence for this oft-repeated assertion.

Latest ABARES data for hardwood imports (in cubic metres) shows they have largely flatlined for over a decade.

This claim is by Sue Baker, a University of Tasmania conservation biologist and associate professor of forest sustainability science.
Claim by a University of Tasmania academic: ' If we're not producing our timber from forests in Tasmania or in Australia, we're importing our timber products from other countries and often they're developing countries and [it's] illegally harvested timber that's coming into Australia.'

VIC GOVT STOPS FUNDING FOR WOMBATS

The work that Mange Management does is truly life saving for wombats.

But recently, the government stopped their modest yearly funding amount to treat these precious native animals.

The funding needs to be urgently reinstated.

If governments want a quick, credible win on productivity and a cleaner set of forward estimates, they should start by ending budget support for native forest logging and backing the parts of the sector that actually generate value. #Auspol
A smart productivity play: Stop subsidising loss-making native forest logging
