I'm 51 years of age, and for all my adult life, the one constant in politics is 'we need to talk about immigration'. Could we try just try shutting the fuck up about it, actually?

Hospices in England are under enormous pressure - rising costs, volatile charitable income, and inadequate government funding are putting vital services at risk. This #HospiceCareWeek, I’m proud to stand with our hospices and recognise the unique and vital care they provide.

Had a really good time with Peter talking about the AI bubble, and said the following, which i stand by:

"I don't do this because I'm like "I'm going to be nasty." No, I do it because I'm pissed off at the way they fucked up the computer."

Enjoyed talking to @edzitron.com, who has been spending a lot of time banging the drum about the AI bubble (and about the problems with tech in general.

Also discussed here: How Ed runs a PR company while he also savages some of the biggest companies in tech.

5/ But I suspect you know that anyway and were after just doing the bantz.

4/ The problem is that people who in the past would have been comfortable are now getting squeezed unless they have assets to cash in, got on the ladder earlier when prices were cheaper, or have an inheritance. The economy doesn't work for enough people outside a relative handful.

3/ £100k household income with more than half going on housing and travel to begin with. Plus travel (train), energy, water costs & food prices going up, wages aren't really rising either. The relative cost of things matter as well.

2/ I'm in my early/mid-50s and have a mortgage until I'm 70-odd. Yes I was fortunate to get on the housing ladder in my 30s in London, and was able, despite being made redundant twice in two years, to get a job in my late 40s in a different sector, having worked in housing, non profit & social care.

1/ Speaking as someone from a household earning around that, living in the south east, I'm not exactly well off. Huge mortgage payments every month. Counting the pennies most of the time. I'm not in penury, but not exactly living in luxury.

ICE arrested comedian Robby Roadsteamer for singing a parody of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” in a Jeffrey Epstein the Giraffe costume outside their facility.

He sings “If you hate brown people / and you are a Nazi” and ICE thugs grab him and drag him into detention. No violence—just speech.

According to @rooster.info, during a Zoom meeting today, he had an American nazi flag displayed in the background.

There is no need for a moral panic about the UK's welfare system.

Far from perfect but recent discourse is nuts

Spending is controlled, not spiralling

Worklessness is near record lows

The World Cup has increasingly become a tool of authoritarian regimes, political corruption, and plain and simple grift. That it looks like the US is going to be the most extreme example of all this yet says volumes about the world in general.

How it started:
"Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return." (Introducing OpenAI blog post, 2015)

On Friday I’m going to have a premium newsletter with a generous (2600 word) free intro about the nasty demands of Sam Altman and OpenAI. They need $161 billion in the next six months - it’s the only way for them to complete any of the plans they have agreed to. A truly nonsensical time.
