Gonna start a thread for the turn of phrases my brain throws at me, mainly so they don't disappear. Updated as needed

I would buy Nebraska and turn it into a statewide corn maze.

lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

NEW: Pentagon officials are forcing staff to watch Pete Hegseth's "Warrior" speech he forced generals to listen to.

Officials are even "testing" staff to see if they watched — and are threatening consequences if they lie about watching it or if they mock it, sources tell @swin24.bsky.social and I.
The Pentagon Is Ordering Staff to Watch Hegseth’s ‘MAGA Garbage’ Speech… Or Else
Defense Department sources tell Zeteo that staff have been warned that if they don’t watch or read the speech, or if they speak negatively of it, they could face severe consequences.

Unfortunately I don’t find your anti communism funny when anti capitalism has been designated as a terrorist activity. Sorry!

Literature is a technology. And like any technology it can be used for good or ill.

The DC and Marvel comics shared universes are, accidentally, the greatest experiments in post-modern storytelling ever created. Thousands of creators have made hundreds of thousands interlocking stories. All because they realized putting favorite characters in other books helped sales.

Piggbacking on that, a story should not be larger than its container, and have everything it needs within it. I shouldn't have to watch 30 hours of Marvel TV to watch a 2 hour Thunderbolts movie. That's work. That's stupid.

We need more critics that can tell what type of lens was used for a shot, why they film crew would choose that shot, and whether it works with what they're attempting to do, rather than speculate about what the post credits scene means.

The internet has thrown elite opinion on art into the trash, which is good. But it also tossed out expert opinion, which is bad for our culture.

To use movies as an example, it is easier than ever to be a film critic and harder than ever to find good film critics.+

So people conform to societal expectations?

Different mediums should be respected as such. You didn't read a book on tape, you listened to an audiobook. There's nothing wrong with that, but they interact with different sensory organs. You wouldn't watch a documentary on eating at The French Laundry and say you ate at The French Laundry.

Stories should feel like someone is sitting next to you, telling you the story, including all the little nooks and crannies they find interesting. It shouldn't just be A to B to C storytelling.

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" is the greatest story every written for this reason.

In general, if a writer makes you go "wow they have bad beliefs, I wish they wrote like they did before", go back and read what they wrote before, it's probably in there as well, we just didn't pick up on it at the time. Go reread some of the Harry Potter books if you don't believe me

i get why people go a different direction, but “this book was fine until the author got weird” always strikes me as a back up analysis. If the book suddenly says some cheap shit, maybe the rest of it is similarly cheap!

I was in my late 20s before I realized that the written and verbal forms of the word epitome were the same. I thought the written one was pronounced "epi-tome" and was an entirely separate word with an identical meaning.

How to spot a bookworm:

They use a word in conversation perfectly but pronounce it ridiculously.

Because they’d never heard it - they read it and learned it from context.

(Mine was facade.)
