Ultimately, he's 72, well past retirement age. I think his top priority before he chooses to do so is getting Mario, Zelda, DK, and Pikmin to a place where he can be confident people will continue enjoying them for the foreseeable future even without his involvement.

I also don't think Miyamoto's ever really seen games as art, but I don't think it's as cynical as just seeing them as capital. I think he sees games as toys. The extent of his creative ambition is to make people smile, and he has a strong intuition for that, but he's never aimed for much more.

I think people are complex.

Miyamoto undeniably appreciates the creative process of game development (sometimes to a fault), but he also recognizes that Nintendo's greatest asset is their IP, and it's in their best business interests to find ways outside of games to strengthen those IP.

It doesn't matter how despicable a person is, mocking their innate physical appearance is always wrong.

Not because it's cruel to them, but because it perpetuates the harmful idea that innate physical appearance has anything to do with one's character / beliefs / actions.

It's hard to say without having access to the full context and knowing Japanese, but my guess is he meant kids don't really play old games. They'll watch a 30 year old Disney movie, but they have little interest in playing a 30 year old game.

Saw a bunch of people getting mad about this, and it's good to remember that one line, taken out of context, translated unofficially by an outlet that doesn't specialize in the topic, should be read with skepticism.

VR is genuinely cool, but unfortunately has been mostly been abandoned because "pretty cool for certain types of games" isn't "the next iPhone that will change the world and print infinite money"
