What I hate most about this is that when people say stuff like "they're at capacity" in these settings, it's a hard door close. You're not making for anyone to work with you, collaborate, compromise, or help. It's an extremely hard no disguised as something softer. It's just frustrating.

I was just told that a heavily-staffed well-funded organization "doesn't have capacity" to do a small presentation at an event where they've had tons of notice to prepare something.

Yes you do! You do have "capacity", you just don't want to do it, which is fine but i wish you'd be honest about it

I'm so sick of hearing the word "capacity", it's become a magic word in non-profit settings that once someone says it projects just stop

It used to have a meaning but now it's just a coded way of saying "I don't want to do this but I don't want to seem like I don't want to do it" for many people
