As of today, I am officially retired! I expect my life to change, well, not at all, at least for now (I was already not teaching because it was summer, I still have my research group, and my last grad student will still be at it for a while), but it’s the beginning of the end, anyway.

Same, and same. I’m so depressed about the Edmonton election, because even if they do pick the best candidates across the board, the resulting council will a) be worse than the current one, and b) have no power to do anything good.

If they all have the same flaw, though, surely the root of it isn’t with the software?

Even the Transit app is the same.

I just tried trips in google maps with downtown Halifax as one end point and Alderney Landing as the other and in both directions the ferry is fifth. Who the heck would rather take 2 buses than take the ferry?
Public transport directions in Google maps for downtown Halifax to Alderney Landing. It recommends 4 different bus routes, ranging from 29 to 39 minutes, some where you have to transfer to a second bus (!!) before it recommends taking the ferry

Wow, that’s nuts! I wonder who we talk to in order to get that fixed.

I got that, I was just adding a different set of information in favour of its anti-ferry bias!

If I tell Google Maps I’m cycling, it sends me across the bridge as the only option. Only if I tell it I’m walking does it acknowledge the existence of the ferry.

More protected intersections please! This video really made me miss my brief time commuting in the Netherlands, aka hopping on a bike and just not thinking about cars. Not having to wonder what that driver is doing. Not having to ride defensively or to avoid certain streets. Just ride.

In all of the other places I’ve lived in where ferries have been part of transit, Google Maps DOES include ferries as an option! I’m astonished that it’s not.

Our local cupcake shop’s take-and-bake cookies may contain “traces” of something unspecified 🤔
A handwritten tag reading: “BAKE @ 375°F for 12-15 mins or until golden brown.
May contain traces”

At the District 8 town hall last week, Mayor Andy Fillmore said there is a phase two to the AAA bike lane network that will cost $65 million. He said that money was on top of the $100 million for the network.

I did some fact checking. Here's the story:

Fact Checking Fillmore: Mayor told town hall Halifax's bike lane network will cost $165 million - Halifax Examiner
At a recent town hall, Andy Fillmore said there's a phase two to the AAA bike lane network that will cost an extra $65 million. But that's not correct.

I’m way too young too, but if my workplace insurance was willing to pay… 🤷‍♀️ Partner got them too (through my insurance) and she’s even younger.

I will always get every vaccine available to me. I even got the RSV and pneumococcal pneumonia vaccines despite being several decades too young to get it for free because my work insurance was willing to cover them.

Tomorrow’s will be my 11th COVID shot! It’s such a privilege to be able to get it when it’s no longer widely available in most places.

You became a historian of something that requires facility with numbers, so presumably you used that ability somewhere in there!

I’m also getting them both at the same time for the first time, and I’m not looking forward to that! I’ll plan for a day of quiet downtime.

I’m so sorry, Jillian! What a good long life.
