I made a run to the Field Museum this week and finally saw the Chicago Archaeopteryx.
Just wow, it’s a stunner. And the exhibit is a beauty! 🪶 👀🤩

Nanotyrannus is cool and all, but what if there was a brand new book written with, and illustrated by, @markwitton.bsky.social on Spinosaurus? Wouldn't that be really cool?

Listen to use talk about it here before it comes out in less than a week!

New frond just dropped. Or do they flop? C. brasieri has a similar structural pattern to the enigmatic mid-Proterozoic "microbial" structures I've been documenting. But where C. brasieri forms elegant fronds, my structures are fractal sprawls. Greater complexity, but lower organisation.
This #FossilFriday I’m excitedly sharing a new #Ediacaran #Charnia brasieri named for my PhD Supervisor & friend Martin Brasier who died 2014. I’ve wanted to name something for him ever since but I wanted it to be something special. When I saw the first one from Inner Meadow I knew it was the 1 🧵

My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:

Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.
The Case of the Tiny Tyrannosaurus Might Have Been Cracked

I don't like that non-pterodactyloids have their fifth toe on the ground, like that's part of your wing, don't rub it on the ground

Blast from the past: Old digital flyer from the early 2010s showcasing some off the palaeo and sci vis work I'd done over the years as a freelancer. Much water passed under the bridge since then, but I'm still available for hire! #scivis #sciart

We have lost the pillar of Scottish vertebrate palaeontology, Dugie Ross. The man that found & named Dearc. He made the science resonate locally, in his native language, on his native soil, while allowing it to grow globally. He embodied the best of science. Immeasurable loss.
