Two friends are in Japan right now and found this at a store called "America Obsessed" - calling @mrillinois.bsky.social
A sweatshirt with a red collared shirt underneath it on a mannequin, displaying the crest of Decatur, Illinois with the word "Decatur" in huge text over top of it.

I’m good for everybody’s unhinged takes, thanks. In fact, I think I’ve got enough of them to last 10,000 years.

“Politics” by Kyla Houbolt, from her forthcoming book, *Becoming Altar* asterismbooks.com/product/beco... @luaz.bsky.social
Politics

The prairie frogs and the swamp frogs disagree on many things. Chief among the points at issue is that the prairie frogs claim they can jump higher farther and faster than the swamp frogs because they are not waterlogged. The swamp frogs take offense at the epithet "waterlogged" and fire back with the word "desiccated", which sets the prairie frogs into a predictable tizzy. The Ancients of both groups do not even try to interfere in this dispute, though they know from their own ancestors that once the prairie was swamp, and the swamp, prairie. Instead, they (the Ancients) relish these times of fuss and bother because it means they can feed in peace on the insect life that becomes agitated into flurries of flight by the frog-jumping competitions that ensue. Although they are called on to judge these competitive games, they always refuse with a platitude, such as "It's best to share knowledge among tribes" or "One day you will all evolve beyond the need to prove yourselves" or "Once you are Ancients, you will understand why we say no" but the real reasons are the abundance of food (those bothered insects) and genuine boredom with the young and their egos. The Ancients congratulate themselves that they no longer have bothersome egos, of course, while plotting against each other for best position in the feeding grounds. They - the Ancients of swamp and prairie - have to pretend not to associate with each other, but All Frog is One, as they are fond of saying, so it's only that tribal enmity that keeps the young unaware of their pretense.
And the snakes? The snakes laugh and laugh, as they pick off the unaware and fill their bellies.

Some lines I saw just now that gave me comfort, and that might give you comfort too.

Meanwhile people keep trying to locate the spot in the time space continuum where holidays turn into museums

Holidays. The idea is, you don’t do the usual thing because you are obliged to do some other thing.

Oh, holidays. I mean, Fellini? A day when everybody goes someplace and reads subtitles. Columbia professor Lorenzo Da Ponte? A day where everybody mentions a much more famous person they worked with once…

I always aspired to the O’Hara bit about being too square in one group and too cool in another but he didn’t make it to his 50s and I have to say after a certain age it’s nice to feel at home somewhere
