I lost #SmallPoemSunday in the maw of a migraine, so jumping onto its tail with this, the source of the title of my soon-to-be book. @tomsnarsky.bsky.social (Is it a title poem even if the title of the poem is not the title of the book? Any poetry experts around here? 😂 )

Every time I turn around,
there it is,
my life,
becoming altar.

“Ethics” by Kyla Houbolt, from her forthcoming book, *Becoming Altar* asterismbooks.com/product/beco... @luaz.bsky.social

Ethics

Is it ethical to be a frog when the snow is on the ground? To be a frog in winter, in a sound mind and body of amphibious elegance? It isn't right! sing the bugs in their dens, we never got a chance to have amphibious elegance, we only got chitinous chic which is far far less groovy. The bugs grouse among themselves, crowding the rotting tree trunks, clicking and whirring and taking committee votes. But the unconcerned frog, who is not hungry for bug at the moment, casts no stones. There is no call to fiddle with all them bugs! thinks the frog to itself, preening in its winter mudhole. Meanwhile, Creator, in the form of Raven, listens in with amusement. None of these creatures knows what's to come, or how blessed their lives are. Though that smug frog might need to be taken down a peg or two, he thinks. Maybe it's time to send in the crows. And of course the poets are listening to all this, and each one is writing notes, and all the notes are different. This is the blessing and the curse of poetry: that it never agrees and that it never agrees. Ethics? Maybe in the spaces between.

This week’s #Poet in #Mexico moves in different directions. ¿Día de Muertos? Yom Kippur? That close. Abrázame mis amores.

The essence of it is this: On whose shoulders do you stand? Or, who are you because?

“One Frog” by Kyla Houbolt, from her forthcoming book, *Becoming Altar* asterismbooks.com/product/beco... @luaz.bsky.social
One Frog

Tonight one frog sings outside. It's no country for rain. I live far away, but I can hear this one frog, it's a loud frog, alone in some creek or other, in a county of two lane roads that twist in the dark. Still there is comfort here because somewhere glimmering among the darkened trees is a lighted window. An old man and his nephew sit inside, whittling. They're making toys. One makes a small cart with rolling wheels; the other makes a dog with a wagging tail. There are no children nearby, not even in the neighboring counties, so one might wonder who the toys are for.
But the old man and his nephew don't seem concerned; they just keep whittling. Occasionally one of them smiles. The shavings go into the fire. The frog sings. The roads twist in the dark. The creek is low. One day it might rain.

My eighteenth book for the Sealey challenge is Daniel Bouchard’s Spider Drop.
Spider Drop, by Daniel Bouchard (Subpress, 2018) ONDERDUNK ROAD
From the Iroquois Museum came the story of a sky woman who fell thru the clouds and was caught by geese who set her down on a turtle's back. Thus, people came.
On Bear Road there were no bears on Schoolhouse Road only a swamp on the state highway freight trucks roared past us for half a mile and on Red Barn Road somebody had recently painted a barn red.
And there the mud covered cows charged toward us and waited for a word at the hot-wired fence
we told them we meant
Helios no offense.
Weeping willow trees were always close to houses while lichen-covered, crag-wrinkled trees had faces to be seen, and recognized.
All these barns with roofs sagging like wet paper tear themselves down by decay. Unstitched nails pop from buckled walls under which the white ash and maple sprout.
When we came down from the hill where fog enshrouded us rushing water in culverts was loud but invisible.
