It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance
b/w photo of a man in socks and sandals, jacket, short and jumper, in front of a wall with a bike leaning on it, and with a pipe in his mouth. If you wanted one image to sum up the word ‘nonchalant’, this would be it

The Asahi has a new simplified Japanese news site, to help language learners, children and the elderly. Around 3 articles a day are written with easy vocabulary and grammar. There are also options to toggle furigana, and spacing between words. yasashii.asahi.com

I'm pretty sure that's not him. He often wore a hat in photographs.
With no RoI, investors pull out, filling stations start closing, and the spiral accelerates. Petrol costs more, takes longer to find, drivers switch to BEVs faster, filling stations close faster, and so do refineries and so on.

The end is nigh.
Half of petrol stations expected to close in next decade - DutchNews.nl
Half of the Netherlands’ petrol stations are set to close in the next five to 10 years as electric cars start to take over the market, according to ING Research. The bank’s economists say there will b...

Expect to see lots more of these. BEVs are replacing petroleum itself. The production, distribution and retail of petrol relies heavily on economies of scale (plus massive subsidies). As BEVs increase in the fleet, petrol sales must decline, those economies cease, and Return on Investment vanishes.

BLARGG WEAR HEADPHONES: an social shaming app that plays a horrible rhasping farty blargg blargg blargg noise loudly and then goes YOU SHOULD WEAR HEADPHONES, and keeps repeating this cycle until they stop playing their music out loud.
Music Canceller: an app that listens to music somebody is playing in public from their phone, works out what the song is, then plays the anti-song to cancel out the sound, loud enough to stop them hearing it. Noise cancellation, but tuned to their song only, milliseconds ahead to affect only them.

Old enough to be gob-smacked seeing John Cooper-Clarke in ads with the Honey Monster. As in, bloody hell, somebody in an *advertising agency* has heard of John Cooper-Clarke!?!

Maybe his agent pitched it.
The Invisible Man is blind.
Got some things right. Loop earplugs. Sony noise cancelling headphones. Lenovo tablet. New Pixel phone, but that made my lovely pocket camera redundant. Worst problem was poor choice of shoes and no exercise before suddenly walking miles. Also better travel apps, contactless payment would've helped.
the youTube is feeding me travel gadgets now, which does appeal. I've literally not thought to use structured pouches and cable ties. After 7 years at home, went away in Spring, struggled with poor choices. Floppy cloth totes, too many cables, batteries, chargers, loose papers. Anxiety over-packing.

You should have more roundabouts and call them Columbus's circles. Especially in Califorida. It would increase road safety considerably. And save money on traffic lights.

The story of how Rush (the band) saved my life.

In 1991, I was going through that high-school phase where you like Rush because some of your friends do. I really liked one song in particular, and it came on the radio one day as I was driving home.

But I couldn't remember the song's name.
No oil changes with BEVs. Or brake pads either if you drive normally. No petrol either, never visit a filling station again.

Leaving my car off for it's first oil change:

Mechanic: Okay great, anything else I need to know?

Me: Oh! Yes. His name is Gerard :) (pats car's hood like a trusty dog)

Mechanic: (the longest pause in human history) No, I meant, is the car making any noises or...?

Me: Oh... Um... No...
Too many words.

You know in that film Amadeus, when the prince says it's nice but there are too many notes? It's meant to imply the prince is a fool who doesn't appreciate Mozart's sophistication.

But he's correct. It has too many notes. Books have too many words. Cut the crap. Get to the point.
