Everyone goes on about "elite overproduction," but the basic reality of our system is that elites have given up on reproducing themselves. Our geriatric governing class is one symptom of that. There's no future for them, other than holding on to power until they die.

I've said this before, but the twenty-first century is nothing more than the longest clearance sale in history. The "new" has been completely dematerialized while our material past--the infrastructure our society runs on--is being stripped for parts by these people.

"Let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America the law is King. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be King; and there ought to be no other."

-- Thomas Paine, "Common Sense"
Post on X from @WhiteHouse. "CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING! -- President Donald J. Trump." The post is accompanied by a mock Time Magazine cover, titled "Trump" and with a portrait of Trump wearing a crown against a backdrop of the New York skyline. The caption on the cover reads, "Long live the king."

And look, I recognize academic discourse can be exhausting and self-referential.

But that’s bc there are circumstances where rigorously defining things like “what do we *actually* mean by intelligence” is important.

Otherwise you build intellectual sandcastles and think you’ve poured concrete.

To everyone who says, "But this won't matter": *MAKE IT MATTER.*

You have that power! This is not inside baseball and your friends and neighbors will likely be appalled. And if they're *not* appalled, don't be cynical yourself. Take the lead, give the cue.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
