I submit that a huge part of the pandemic of distrust is that reactionaries & progressives the world over are both dissatisfied with democracy, for different reasons, but this creates a pervasive common sense (via incompletely theorized agreement) that democracy's in crisis.

A while back, someone challenged my "all stick, no carrots" description of the Trump regime by suggesting that these people are so deluded that they think "the privilege of serving Donald Trump and knowing your suffering is Making America Great Again" is a carrot so big that no other is necessary.

Trump doesn't realize anything, his brain resembles what comes out of a slushie machine, but apparently FIFA bans any kind of branding including stadium names so Gillette has to be called "Boston Stadium" in anything related to the World Cup. Ergo bad

Gillette Stadium will have new name during 2026 World Cup
FIFA says "Boston Stadium" will host seven World Cup matches, including two during the knockout rounds of the 2026 tournament.

I think there was an idea, that we would just kind of automate the culture going forward, with an enuring pre-9/11, post-Obama tech optimism, and that was just always going to be a fantasy.

With the assumptions in place, the main event: why are people distrustful of democracy?

Put simply: because they're told to distrust it. They're told it's betrayed them, that it's failing. That's why people are becoming disillusioned—& it's why some support parties who say so. But WHO'S SAYING IT?

The current milieu is polluted with authoritarianism, in part because a handful of huge organizations -- global and domestic -- have been committed to dumping high volumes of toxic authoritarianism into it: bsky.app/profile/kjep...

They're present in a social milieu, ambient in the cultural environment. We encounter them, adopt or reject them, & index our views of their prevalence on the frequency of our encounters. That indexing tells us whether we think they're norms; is this common sense, what everyone thinks?

I'm gonna try to articulate something I've been thinking about for a while, regarding *why* disillusionment, distrust, & dissatisfaction with democracy are rising.

Almost everything I read takes this phenomenon as an exogenous shock, assuming no one chose to make it so. I suspect that's incomplete.

journalism is failing because the people doing the job at the highest levels want to see it fail.

just saw this video (with serial sexual harasser Mark Halperin) and her whole shtick makes sense now.

she says that covering Trump is “fun” and “exciting” and she will miss him when he’s gone because she won’t know what to do.

It’s literally all just a game to her. pure sociopathy imo

It's kind of amazing how rancid, and how quickly, things have gotten; in the milieu where chin-stroking 'what if the bigots have a point?' ragebait dominates the zeitgeist.

the obsession with milieu is starting to make more sense.

i think there's something parallel here, in how reporters are wedded to the DC-trumpist milieu of 'interesting' criminals.

I know the whole “every accusation is a confession” thing but it’s pretty clear this is the most elitist government that’s existed in decades. It’s just 12 billionaires in a group chat sharing banned Reddit memes

Journalist with sinecures, and national bylines discovered it's a lot easier to do your job when their work is just a feature vector of some media holding company's growth model.

The return of Nuzzi discourse highlights the fact that "journalistic ethics" (scare quotes very much intended) are an entirely unenforced, one way guideline, and the only true sin journalists recognize is plagiarism, and then only if it's socially convenient.
jmgreene28.bsky.social
Nuzzi is also incredibly racist, which is objectively an asset for your monthly MAU targets these days.

Talia doesn't want us to save democracy, she wants to make sure the people who show up to protests are still people she wants to date. I'm going to keep observing this about everyone who posts stuff like this, because it's true. These people are socialites, not activists.

public policy is not a door dash order, you need to do the actual work of *coalition building* if you want to achieve anything worth a damn.

Disability is one of the only minority groups you can join at any time.

Everyone thinks they will be the exception.

It won’t happen to them. They will “try harder” and overcome.

They think we’re failing.

It is not a moral failing and very few people will be the exception.
