Happy birthday, Wynton Marsalis. Though an often polarizing figure, he has been very effective in his mission to keep jazz in the cultural consciousness. I saw his Septet perform in April 1990 - awesome.

Happy birthday, Dizzy Gillespie! It was super fun seeing him on the Muppet Show in 1980. His solo is awesome, and Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem were on fire that night. This was the bongo player’s only gig with them.

1 in 8 households don’t have the money to buy enough food.

@australianlabor.bsky.social has chosen to keep people in punitive poverty on jobseeker.

More than 10,000 Australians are being added to the ranks of the nation’s homeless each month.

“You didn’t vote for it, you weren’t even asked, but it was decided three years ago – mostly by those the Reserve Bank – that Australia needed an extra 150,000 or so people to be unemployed.”

My column on unemployment hitting 4.5%

Miles Davis's then wife Frances insisted he accompany her to a performance by flamenco dancer Roberto Iglesias. Miles went out and bought every flamenco album he could. That is how the iconic 1960 album Sketches of Spain came about. Arranger Gil Evans did the rest....

I'm waiting. #auspol

This feels like it went under the radar a bit re public alarm - why are *ICE* stockpiling guided missiles? An agency that only operates domestically?
ICE is stockpiling arms, including chemical weapons, guided missile warheads and explosive components. The spending dwarfs anything we've ever seen in the agency - a 700% increase.

The President is building an army to attack his own country.

For years, there's been a massive over-emphasis on food miles, and a massive under-emphasis on food type.
By far and away the best dietary decision you can make, for environmental, humanitarian and public health purposes, is to cut out animal products.
