BlueSky's hoppin' now, so here's a new intro post: I'm a hobbyist solo game developer. I've made a lot of puzzple platformers but also play with other genres too. I've also created comics, movies, and short stories. I do academic copyediting and library work. I like Gundam, film, birds, and cats.

a thing that's depressing is reading about how annoyed people were with crypto and crypto bros in, like, 2016. that was almost a decade ago!

Again, it is a full-blown federal felony crime for anyone in the White House or Executive Office of the President to order tax investigations into anyone.

And it's not just a crime to DO it, it's even a federal crime for an employee not to REPORT such an order to the Treasury Inspector General.

(a)Prohibition
It shall be unlawful for any applicable person to request, directly or indirectly, any officer or employee of the Internal Revenue Service to conduct or terminate an audit or other investigation of any particular taxpayer with respect to the tax liability of such taxpayer.

(b)Reporting requirement
Any officer or employee of the Internal Revenue Service receiving any request prohibited by subsection (a) shall report the receipt of such request to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

(c)Exceptions
Subsection (a) shall not apply to any written request made—
(1)to an applicable person by or on behalf of the taxpayer and forwarded by such applicable person to the Internal Revenue Service;
(2)by an applicable person for disclosure of return or return information under section 6103 if such request is made in accordance with the requirements of such section; or
(3)by the Secretary of the Treasury as a consequence of the implementation of a change in tax policy.
(d)Penalty
Any person who willfully violates subsection (a) or fails to report under subsection (b) shall be punished upon conviction by a fine in any amount not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.

(e)Applicable person
For purposes of this section, the term “applicable person” means—
(1)the President, the Vice President, any employee of the executive office of the President, and any employee of the executive office of the Vice President; and
(2)any individual (other than the Attorney General of the United States) serving in a position specified in section 5312 of title 5, United States Code.

This is all illegal, the President can't simply disregard the laws passed and agencies created by Congress, and both Vought & Trump would be impeached if the Constitution or the rule of law mattered to the GOP.

There's literally no reason for Congress to exist if any random freak in the presidential orbit can nullify laws and seize federal funds. All of this is plainly illegal, but Mike Johnson leads the most corrupt Congress in US history (and by a wide margin.)

we needed to give the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) an opportunity to respond to the claims, which I hadn’t done. I emailed DHS, and Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary of homeland security, gave me the reply I was expecting, which was very close to verbatim the reply DHS had given to others. And so I produced the following parenthetical:

(Journalistic convention compels me to note that Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin called these allegations “disgusting and categorically FALSE,” all-caps in the original. The fact that I live on Earth and am not mentally disabled compels me to note that McLaughlin works for a serial fabulist, Kristi Noem, who works for another serial fabulist, Donald Trump, who once created an imaginary friend to lie to the New York Post about his sex life, in an administration packed to the gills with pathological liars such as J.D. Vance, who has an especial penchant for lying about poor, non-white immigrants who have the bad taste to move to places where there are white people, such as Springfield, Ohio. I wouldn’t want to mislead Dispatch readers into believing that DHS denials of these claims—or of anything else—are worth taking seriously. Hooray for journalistic convention.)

That was the toned-down version. My original draft (which I did not trouble my editors with) was a bit hotter, but substantively identical, just with a few extra gerunds that Declan would probably feel obliged to bowdlerize in keeping with our family-friendly house style here at The Dispatch.
