@jaydocovid.bsky.social as always brings incredible points up and always has the receipts - please check his 🧵 out about masking and the social stigma around Covid.
People are so afraid to admit that they, like everyone else, are susceptible to severe #covid and #longcovid that they refuse to mask.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
To say people make a rational assessment of the threat environment around Covid… is just not true.

Most people refuse to talk about or read anything about Covid.

Long Covid has surpassed asthma as the most common childhood illness, and it’s rarely spoken of.

Dear liberals,

If you identify as a leftist who believes in intersectional justice & fighting fascism, please wear a mask in public. It’s one small act of solidarity with the millions living with long Covid - and a reminder that caring for others includes protecting their health
jaydocovid.bsky.social
It pisses me off to no end that Long Covid affects hundreds of millions of people globally and no one I know can name a Long Covid expert or any of the leading labs looking into it. It’s simply not a topic people want to pay any attention to, and I consider that living in fear, or at least denial.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
There is no quicker way to make people uncomfortable and to not want to talk to you than to share the latest findings of what Covid does in our bodies.

Almost no one I know has done a rational assessment of the threat environment since 2021 when we were told to vax and relax into Delta and Omicron.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
This started with a conversation around masking. People have a trauma response to masking that’s unhealthy.

I have a friend who got sick at a doctor’s appointment which turned to Long Covid. Others masking would have prevented that.

My own doctor tells me not to mask at appointments. Why?

UCLA’s Long Covid clinic director explains that Covid is not a lung issue but “vascular and neurologic infection.”

A Duke cardiologist shares “we see people have symptoms from almost head to toe.”

People don’t care, they don’t want to hear it.

The "head-to-toe" effects of COVID-19 infection mean you still need to be cautious, experts say.

I kindly end by asking @jamellebouie.net, are you familiar with the best estimates of Long Covid rates per infection? Do you know about ACE2 receptors, Covid’s primary target that are ubiquitous in the body? Do you know how Covid disrupts the immune system? That Covid can persist months/years?
jaydocovid.bsky.social
Rather, I’d say the opposite - the people who study Covid and its multisystemic impact are alarmed by what they find and more likely to wear a respirator than most people, but even Dr.’s succumb to peer pressure, and facing a reality most want to ignore is lonely and thankless.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
The average person is not informed that Covid is not confined to the respiratory system and infects blood vessels, immune cells, and the brain.

We rolled the dice and have exposed everyone to SARS2 repeatedly, and the idea that this has been determined safe through rigorous study is patently false.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
The public’s approach to Covid can be boiled down to this:

“I have been forced to be exposed to this virus every year, and my kids too. I can go along with business and government and pretend this isn’t dangerous, or I can face danger every day and be aware they repeat Covid is not safe.”

I think there’s a middle ground where people mask more often, talk about Covid as an issue more often, which creates opportunities to get more resources and to reduce the Covid levels we’re seeing. The issue with denial is that it prevents any measures even if incomplete ones.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
But you are getting to the root: business and government forced people back to normal, and my issue is that most people wanted that normal too, so they didn’t really fight back or object much. They were ready to take off their masks too and didn’t want to hear any info against that.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
That’s largely true but people treat it as all or nothing - if my employer won’t let me mask, what’s the point. And people then don’t mask at the Dr, don’t mask in transit. And we will never get resources for masks and tests and public health if people refuse to talk about it as an ongoing problem.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
People don't disagree with me about Covid, they just refuse to talk about it.

If Covid is no longer a problem why does it make everyone uncomfortable?

It’s trauma and refusing to face that something that’s pervasive is also dangerous.

Hey, so...Covid rates have gotten real high. Maybe change your behavior to fit this new risk profile? Stop eating indoors at restaurants, mask on mass transit, that kind of thing?
A graph of Covid rates. It's more complex than can be described here, but the important bit is that the rates have gone up a lot since late July, nearly to the heights of last winter.

I don’t know why you’re dead set on being reductive, even that example has layers of context to it. And sometimes people don’t understand and need clarification.

"Currently infected" is based on the avg 10 day span between becoming infected and clearing the virus.

On average, data suggests people are "Reasonably infectious" for about 3 to 4 days where they can readily infect someone out of the household. I used 4 days for the estimate.
jaydocovid.bsky.social
That’s not helpful, I was gonna ask the same thing, it’s not clear what it means
