meanwhile llms do not have such libraries or real world contact with the meaning of the tokens. they too do physical math, but not the math in the prompt; they do relational statistics between meaningless tokens. THAT is what they're extremely good at, not answering questions

in case that was confusing: calculators do math physically, via the fact that on/off can be used for numbers in binary. also there's a human-made library that translates decimal input into binary and vice versa.

this is all irrelevant. the conscious mind isn't even most of brain function. and walking isn't defined as something humans understand, meanwhile language is definitionally a set of arbitrary sounds/symbols that transmit meaning between people.

there's a difference between wetware understanding something and a person being consciously aware of it.

so the fact that an llm has no concept of the externam worls or symbol-meaning means they will never be reliably right the way calculators are.

meanwhile humans can be actually taught to figure this out for themselves because humans can be taught number sense

correct. an llm has no idea what any prompts mean, including math prompts. the reason it gives a math answer is that math generally clusters with other math in the training material

Glad to see the "Chicago rat hole" (rodent-body imprint) of January 2024 Internet fame was studied more, but just to add my $0.02: Many folks missed the tracks leading away from the body imprint, meaning the squirrel (not rat) fell & splatted in wet concrete, but then walked it off. 🧪🐿️🐾
