IIRC, the Bugle even once implied he *was* a mutant as part of their smear campaign, something that was made easier because he pals around with the X-Men a lot.

But I would also say that bigotry doesn't have to make sense. It can be arbitrary and hypocritical. It is in the real world.

See, I don't know if Spider-Man is the character you want to make that comparison with, because he's a fairly controversial character in-universe. The Daily Bugle constantly smears him, there are multiple arcs where he's on the run from the cops, etc.

There's some truth to that, but on the other hand... Well, it's the Marvel Universe. They're far from the *only* people who can do those things, but they're treated worse than all the others merely because of the circumstances of how they acquired those powers.
