Hi y'all! I should probably do an intro. I'm Cee (she/her), an independent social historian in the American South. I study medieval Britain, the American colonial period, World War I, and the history of death & mourning. I do living history as an 18th-century cannoneer and needleworker. 🧵

Hey, remember in 1783 how Philadelphia built a triumphal arch to celebrate the end of the Revolution and then God used the celebratory fireworks to burn it down and kill people and injure its designer, who came to regard it as punishment for his hubris? Anyway.

she also doesn't mask anymore but at least she doesn't judge that i do (most of our visitors do judge me lol)
how do we encourage people to get vaxed when even medical professionals advertise that they're not? how do i convince her that she's the one being fooled, not me? she's never had covid and has been vaxed before.
yesterday one of our volunteers, who i generally respect, said she's not getting a covid vax this year cos it's "controversial." i explained that no, not really, but she said her doctor (who gave her a flu shot) also wasn't getting one.

Everyone should use alt text, but educators/communicators and artists specifically should make sure they're using it.

Accessibility makes the world a better place, takes less than 2 mins, and allows more people to find you!
No worries! If an image has ALT in the bottom right, it has alt text! Alt text helps everyone from those who use screen readers to those who need extra context on why a photo or gif was used.

It also helps posts become discoverable in searches.

You can toggle it to be mandatory in settings.
An infographic on how to write alt text.

Title: Writing Alt Text
Subtitle: Identify who, Expression, Description, Color, Interesting features (all in different color bubbles)

Sentence describing the image on the left: A capybara looking relaxed in a hot spa. Yellow yuzu fruits are floating in the water, and one is balanced on the top of the capybara's head.

Various parts of the sentence are bubbled in matching colors to indicate which aspect of alt text is being used.

Just trying to keep track of the conservative definition of "children" here.

Children:
- racist Republicans in their 30s
-trans adults seeking medical care
-embryos

Not children:
-Black people under age 18
-Gazans under age 18
-immigrants under age 18
-rape victims under age 18
JD Vance when people makes jokes about Charlie Kirk: "call their employer."

JD Vance when Republican staffers say "I love Hitler" and fantasize about throwing political opponents in gas chambers: "that's what kids do...we're not canceling kids because they did something stupid."

One of the posts that got me flamed back in the old place was when I said I didn’t fetishise books as objects and wasn’t bothered if their owners wanted to rip them in half to make their baggage lighter or chuck them in the recycling once they’ve read them or whatever. Some people went ballistic
The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.
Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

i do not like living under a government run by the worst facebook posts you've ever seen
Emmer: "We call it the 'Hate America' rally because you'll see the hate for America all over this thing when they show up. The rumor is that they can't end this shutdown because this small but very violent and vocal group is the only one that's happy about this."
