Before the descendants of Saito Hajime released that photograph in the 2010s, the internet had to settle for a zoomed in picture of a Meiji-era police troop who might have been him. It was the best that could be done.

While you wait for my Shinsengumi series on #FridayNightHistory to resume, here's a thread of interesting facts about that unit.
riversidewings.bsky.social
Okay, interesting Shinsengumi anecdotes, by request from @metaomicsnerd.bsky.social --

1. Todo Heisuke was (we think!) the illegitimate son of the daimyo of Tsu. I imagine this got awkward around Toba-Fushimi.
2. There's circumstantial evidence that Harada survived the Battle of Ueno.

Ieyasu waited 422 years for this.

Ieyasu-kun, the mascot of Hamamatsu City, is modelled on Tokugawa Ieyasu, a shogun who once lived there. He has piano keys on his hakama skirt (Hamamatsu is home to keyboard manufacturers Yamaha, Kawai, and Roland).
A round-headed mascot with a helmet and a hakama with piano keys decorating it stands on a stage.

It looks like Kitami used to be known for mint production, and there's also a big sports training camp that includes rugby. I think Ki-tan's makers might not have been able to get exact stock imagery.

Katazome Sample Books (Japanese Stencil-Dyeing Sample Books) – Part 3 of 4

In the Edo period, sample books were created by pasting pieces of stenciled washi (Japanese paper) to serve as references for katazome (stencil-dyeing) designs.

Of all the stories to come out of the Osaka Campaign of 1614-15, my favorite might be the one related in Tokugawa Munefusa's "Tokugawa 400nen no Naishobanashi," where Satsuma domain some decades later wrote the Shogunate asking:

"sooo, if we had Toyotomi Hideyori in our care, would you uh, be mad?"

Down-thread mentions how Tokyo got its water from Tama. The Tama River and the multiple systems it fed were instrumental in allowing Edo to grow to its peak of a million during the Tokugawa period. www.jstor.org/stable/204726

Yabusame takes years of practice to perfect, but it is a highly coveted art that emphasizes the samurai spirit and the unspoken language between rider and horse, known as kyuba no michi (弓馬の道) (きゅばのみち), or “the way of the bow and horse.”

Ancient. Colorful. Hard as hell. Meet Yabusame, and learn how the samurai's "way of the bow and horse" evolved into a beautiful art form.

Did you come to Japan to admire the natural beauty, only to find yourself surrounded by ugly power lines? Why ARE Japanese skies so wiry, anyway? We take a look at how cable and power lines came to blanket the urban Japanese landscape.
What’s With the Chaos of Japanese Power Lines? - Unseen Japan
Look up in a Japanese city, and you're likely to see a sky view partly obscured by power lines. Why Japan's utility lines are more visible than those in other advanced economies.
