She is needed on the Paxos, backing up Kallista and fighting the good fight.

So the ending as I currently see it, unusually for a romance, is that they say goodbye for now, with a promise to reunite in time (though I think they also establish that it's an open relationship too, no jealousy)

she can be part of the emancipation of the Isles (also this means she gets to have an ass-kicking Gandalf at Helm's Deep style return moment, probably in Book 3 of the main trilogy, where she can save the Paxos from certain doom - spoilers for another book!!!)

Iona of course cannot go with her.

swashbuckling escape from peril and reunite after searching for their answers apart, is that Daphne volunteers to go to Nairu with the mages, with the full understanding that as she is quite advanced already she will be put on a streamlined track, and she intends to return to the Isles asap so

It starts from Alexander's exit from London, almost immediately following 1660's plot.

I'm still going with my philosophy of "slow start", letting you soak in the characters and setup first, but I do plan to have the first action scene (which I've finally figured out. ish) in chapter 1!

The story opens with Atl preparing for the tournament where he will fight the other candidates to the death for the crown. He gets outed as trans, and must make the decision to go through with the tournament anyway even without support from the Hive, only the drones, and he plans to die+

An attacking force arrives to retrieve Daphne, thinking she's been kidnapped. Kallista's crush Geni manages to avert a disaster with her peace magic (much to Iona's chagrin, looking at the lovesick expression on Kallista's face!) and negotiates for Daphne to be allowed to leave the island.

The diplomacy goes all right, the dryads are a bit too aloof but maybe there's hope for the future. Iona leaves, thinking that maybe they might be able to work with the dryads in the future. Everything seems fine...

Then she realises that Daphne has followed her down to the village.

But Iona is determined to get an alliance with the dryads against the invading forces of the Capital. Oh and also aforementioned bff Captain Kallista has a sprained ankle so she can't make the trek.

Iona meets the dryads, and Daphne, who is instantly, obviously, taken with her.
