As part of a brand identity refresh, the Govt logo has a new dot, though not any old dot, because "the dot is a guiding hand, for life". I've no idea what that means either

Brexit was never about anti-globalisation. Jack is spot on about real reasons, to which I'd add ignorance and dislike of the EU fomented by years of mockery and denigration by certain Tories and Farage, that was never seriously challenged and allowed to fester... www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Who do I blame? Eight reasons we ended up in this Brexit mess | Ian Jack
From immigration and lost jobs to the playing fields of Eton, it’s useful to pin down exactly why the UK is leaving Europe, writes the Guardian columnist Ian Jack

They always start with free speech. It sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? Free speech? And they can use it to shut down anyone who criticises them, because it’s all “free speech”

After “free speech” it’s “protecting women and girls”

And then it’s whatever they actually wanted.

The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

FWIW, British censuses 1851-1911 included a column to note whether deaf-and-dumb, blind, imbecile or idiot, lunatic. In 1871 a very distant relative of mine was recorded "imbecile" but also worked as an agricultural labourer and lived alone

Interesting read, thanks. Wrt scientific humanism, there are many other authors who could be mentioned from 1920s to 70s: Stoddard, Otto, Reiser, Julian Huxley and Antony Flew

Johnson is Speaker for House of Reps. Nearest equivalent in UK would be PM. As majority leader he's not neutral. In the words of @sethabramson.bsky.social "he's crafting a big narrative about how he and others have been patient with a nonexistent situation. In other times we'd call this psychopathy"

Ah, that reminds me of a similar image of some grape-gathering hedgehogs! There's a wonderful animation that goes with them...

Very revealing of a Christian (Calvinist) mindset who wants everyone to “turn to Christ” but who is obsessed with Mosaic law and predictably sex, Pride parades, abortion, adultery (stoning? hey, why not!) etc. Wilson’s "Christendom 2.0" (1.0 had bugs!) would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous

To be fair, she’s reflecting the view put forward in the Shaping Us Framework launched earlier this year. The main report cites over 230 references. She wrote the foreword and I guess she should have left it at that

Tories are living in alternative realities. Jenrick is just a racist nutjob, but even bright young thing Katie Lam is pining for the good old asylum days when it was beautiful ballerinas defecting from Soviet Union

Agree, they're wonderful. Seen them regularly since 2009 - a crazy beautiful singing phenomenon. The group's leader ("spookmeister") Stephen Taberner is a genius
