statstically speaking if you get me/cfs from long covid your doctor is not going to help, and yr actual medical advice will come from ppl like me who've spent the last 5 years reading medical papers.

you do not want someone who can no longer type the word "statidtically" to be your replacement doc.

Took me awhile to read this excellent, deeply researched and reported piece. So grateful to @emcahan.bsky.social and @rollingstone.com giving Long Covid in kids the attention it deserves and for highlighting the difficulties of getting a diagnosis and support.

Reposting my hooded crow from this time last year because I love his little fall vibes.

a digital painting of a hooded crow. the bird is centered in the image, with most of his body facing forward to the viewer, and his head in profile so that his bill is pointing to the left. he is mostly white with a black head and spots on his wings and tail, but the artist has included flourishes of aqua and blue in his feathers. he is surrounded by yellow and orange leaves that become more and more abstract as they fall to the background. a few blades of green grass cut the front from the left corner.

“Millions of Americans are impacted by long Covid, and they deserve a federal government that will have their back,” Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine told Rolling Stone.

“The Trump administration is not only failing to achieve those goals, but actively taking us in the wrong direction.”

it is absolutely ok to do that! if you don't have all your memory needs met by internal memory it is 100% acceptable to use external memory to help

A music magazine doing better reporting on this dire issue than any legacy mainstream media.

This is just my reminder that I need help. Right now my PayPal has about $10 in it since I bought some more bandaging for my wounds but other than that I don't have many funds. No set goal today but I do have to go to the doctor tomorrow.

someone with very limited physical ability can still have a very high degree of autonomy if their actual material needs are being met externally. there is nothing stopping this from happening except government cruelty and the extreme individualist isolation of our society.
in our current society, if you run out of both physical and financial runway, you no longer get to be a person on your own terms. you either live by someone else's or you die
generally speaking we have decided that autonomy is only for the physically able or the financially able

Important thread
In 1980, President Carter signed The Mental Health Systems Act en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_... in an effort to streamline community mental health care and to destigmatize mental illness. The idea was to move people into their neighborhoods or keep them at home while providing therapies and meds.

i'm really enamoured with the idea of a "fantasy console" that has both a standalone emulator & also the possibility to run that emulator on some kind of custom-built hardware
i had not heard of UXN prior to this! that's really interesting...

i was thinking of this topic mostly in terms of what future developers of fantasy consoles might do differently in order to facilitate emulation.

but i'm also interested what else has/hasn't been attempted re: fantasy -> FPGA
definitely. thinking about the feasibility of fantasy consoles on FPGA is what led me to this thought
An interesting thing to compare is FPGA implementations… UXN was very hard to implement in gateware and no one has managed pico 8, since these things were designed for software VMs.
- ex. game boy is so easily emulated it's become this fixed platform almost unmoored from hardware, but it's difficult to develop for

- ex. pico-8 prioritizes ease of use, but doesn't have a clear fixed spec

- what i'm wishing for: the fantasy console ethos applied to a true fixed platform
... there does appear to be at least one effort to emulate pico-8. it has an incomplete instruction set (?), and doesn't match all of the features of the original spec. but it does work. i'd like to see more like this
something i think should exist is a fantasy console with a rigid-enough technical spec such that you could design an emulator for it

pico-8 and other currently existing fantasy consoles function more like virtual machines without reference hardware, so they are stuck existing as "applications"
i actually do want to talk with you on the phone. i'm not kidding. i'm better at talking over voice than i am at texting. let's chat sometime
i actually couldn't relate less to the zillennial "don't perceive me, don't take me out in public, don't come to my house, don't call me" thing.

i love living around lots of other people, i love being in crowds, i love being around people.

that's why being chronically ill is so devastating to me

it's almost daily you see a moderately known person with a large following authoritatively say that covid isn't a big deal anymore and you go okay so what studies have you been reading because hundreds of thousands papers disprove that and they're just like well because I think so. vibes alone.
i love this for you, sincerely
sometimes it's a fluid thing, but i've also had multiple relationships where the agreed-upon thing decided on by both people involved is [nontraditional in-between thing]. every one of these is different, but like, so is every relationship in general
