I'm more surprised that a UPS delivery driver would *accept* a cheque than just having them in the first place :) I don't think they would accept it in Canada...

1. As some Democrats have run from transgender rights, Zohran Mamdani is showing what so many others have lacked: courage to lead with his values over pandering to focus groups.

The ad is one of the best things I've seen from a politician on transgender people.

As Some Dems Run From Trans People, Zohran Mamdani's Latest Ad Shows Real Support
The 2 minute ad features Sylvia Rivera's story, Mamdani's commitment to transgender people, and even music from the legendary late trans artist SOPHIE.

Surprised no one on this thread is talking about this fantastic interview of Zohran by Anania Williams back in May.

Police in the US are comparable to the Iraqi Hashd ash Shaabi/PMU. Ostensibly part of a state security service run by elected civilian leadership, but in practice serve as an independent paramilitary completely unaccountable to civilian democratic control.

Revolutionary zine'ing at its best!!

Wow, you guys!

1) We had well over 100 people come through

2) Because of generous volunteers we were able to fold 2500 zines and pair them with around 1500 whistles

3) This is now a weekly event at Nighthawk

4) Nighthawk offered to be a hub for whistle donations and distribution every day

We’re doing it again! This Friday at Nighthawk (4744 N Kimball)

When I caught measles as a kid (even though I was vaxxed) I got encephalitis and was hospitalized for 17 days. I couldn't even keep water down, I was puking and shitting everything out.

Your reminder—or maybe no one ever told you—that complications from a measles infection include immune amnesia (where you lose immunity to everything), vision and hearing loss, brain damage, and a fatal brain disease called Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis that can show up years later.

Hundreds of children in multiple states are in quarantine and on remote learning due to measles outbreaks.

The decline in MMR vaccinations has resulted in the US experiencing an increase of measles cases with 1563 total cases & 3 deaths since January.

Yeah I have a small readership now but most are close friends so it's my place to chat about my life in private...

I donated some copies of Let This Radicalize You for distribution at an ICE watch training for folks who want to join school patrols in a nearby neighborhood. Not everyone got a copy, because 120 people showed up for that training tonight. I am endlessly proud of Chicago.
A display of copies of Let This Radicalize You on a table in front of a sign that reads: "Let This Radicalize You offers stories, strategy and heart for the kind of collective care and resistance we're building together today. It helps us move from reacting to organizing. Showing how ordinary people protect each other, build power, and keep hope alive. Take a copy. Read it. Stay connected."

I'm sorry you had to go through that. :(

Had you migrated over to Dreamwidth? Some of us are still there...

Yeah, websites got replaced by platforms... My original distro's website/catalogue was all coded by hand too. I have long retired it, and when I come back, even though I'm a fullstack web developer, I'm probably going to use a platform first to get going...

"Can I still use my old account after I migrate?

Sorry, no. After you migrate, your old account will generally be either disabled or fully managed by Bridgy Fed. You won't be able to log into it and use it directly yourself. "

Why does it work that way? It seems like an obstacle to adoption...

This is so awful. Star Fruit Books was such an exciting project, I have a small collection of their published works. Matt was such a great guy. Rest in peace.

I met a "retired" zinester at a Palestine action recently (they hadn't made a zine in 30+ years) and they were so thrilled to learn that people were still into zines that they made a phenomenal old school Israel/Palestine collage zine for my distro in about a week :)

And of course there were great comics as well, so it's not like we were not going to have some. But there's more than I'd like. 8)

The internet has given many writers an easier medium to spread their work... I was recently on a panel that reviewed 210 applications for 60 tables at a fair, and even though we explicitly had a "text-first" mandate, there was not enough decent applicants to make it a text-only fair.

stty

wizardzines.com/comics/stty/

(from The Secret Rules of the Terminal, out now! wizardzines.com/zines/termin...)
your TTY driver has configuration

you can see how it’s configured by running:

stty -a

for example it print out the current window size!
Ctrl+S

by default, pressing Ctrl+S wi(( freeze your terminal (and Ctrl+Q wi(( unfreeze) I have never wanted this in my life, you can turn it off with stty -ixon (fish turns it off by default)

###fun fact: changing Ctrl+C technically you can use stty to set a different keyboard shortcut for Ctrl+C, (ike “u”

stty intr u

this is extremely chaotic and I can’t imagine a reason that I would ever do this though
programs have to configure the TTY driver to get friendly features

developer: I want arrow keys to work in my program!

other person: better tell the TTY driver to turn off canonical mode! (more on the next page)
the TTY driver’s settings are called “termios settings”

for the gnarly details:

man termios

but if you’re writing a terminal program libraries like readline or ncurses will handle setting up the TTY driver
panel 6

smiling stick figure with short curly hair: I’ve only needed to use stty once in the last 20 years and I mostly don’t understand its output but I think it’s a fun view into terminal internals!
