Hello #PortfolioDay!
I'm Abi, and illustrator with a bold and colourful digital style.
Portfolio: abistevens_art
Email: [email protected]

Currently looking for commission work! (Private and/or commercial!)
#commissionsOpen #illustration #art

Here's some of my favourite personal work!
A digital illustration of a purple figure with a flat expression and their hands up grasping weakly at colourful looping shapes with bold black lines. Some have yellow eyes at the centre, they obscure most of the figures head, neck and shoulders. A digital illustration of a colourful moth with swirly leafy details in its wings and a pastel rainbow ombre body. It is framed by swirly leafy shapes also in pastel ombre tones, and a rainbow spiral with circles showing the phases of the moon in yellow and white. The large full moon rests at the centre of the spiral and under the moths right wing. A sigitL illustration of a white bat with 2 heads and eight wings in flight. It has no eyes and each wing is a different colour: blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, indigo and violet. It is framed by pastel sparkles and a gold ring border with a repeating pattern of eyeballs around it. In the outer corners are feathery stylised purple wings, and circles showing the phases of the moon. A digital illustration: a parody of memento mori still life paintings but it's arranged on a beach and has a 'goth summer' theme. Objects include a skull, sunglasses, globe beachball with a witch hat on top, romance books with a knife stabbed in the top, a cocktail with an eyeball in it, a poison punch bottle, suncream, fang sweets, melting icecream, shells, bucket and spade, beach bag and towels. They are framed by a grey beach umbrella, deckchair, and a footprint in the sand.

Caught the Bari Weiss episode of Last Week Tonight finally and my biggest takeaway is that those weirdos seem to think lateral reading counts as journalism. You're not being a reporter by just opening a new tab and googling someone's name. That's what my high school students do, you dorks.

an illustration of Marsha P Johnson walking through a flower garden shop. She holds a flowercrown while smiling back at the two boys putting flower crowns on each others heads. An illustration featuring different kinds of people sitting in a high ceiling room together while reading books. An illustration showing 3 Black people's profiles looking out into the distance with a hopeful look on their faces. An illustration from the inside of a bus showing a little Black girl looking out through the window as people walk by with various different hairstyles.

I think this is a common question from agents when you start discussing your work and thinking about working together: "What else is in your back pocket? What are you interested in pursuing?" So when querying a board book, I'd advise to be thinking about this question.
grahamophones.bsky.social
- my feeling about representing board books is that I'd probably like for the client to have other things they'd like to work on as well, and not write solely for that market, since it is so small & hard to break into as a creator.
grahamophones.bsky.social
I'd look at a board book, but they're often generated in house at publishers, definitely harder to sell due to their production cost - lots goes into "why a board book" when pitching. 200 words + could be a picture book, depending on the content, etc. -

“You imagine that” is actually the most devastating part of this to me

It’s such a poignant wtf is wrong with you that you think that is smart response

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Not using AI is not "burying your head in the sand" lol - it's being aware of the consequences and making a choice.

If it's important to protect copyright & use AI ethically & think about labor and NONE OF THAT IS HAPPENING NOW, then now is not the time to use AI, buddy.

Does banned books week feel stale to anyone else? Can't tell if it's just that I live somewhere where censorship is an active, living threat, which a book display with 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 doesn't really speak to.

I do want to apologize in advance to anyone who wrote a prologue & has a date with me at this writer's conference this month for query/ms critiques. My note is just going to be "I do not care for prologues."

There will be other notes & compliments, but the prologue thing is just a prejudice I have
