Hi new followers! Guess I'll introduce myself 😅

I'm Gavin: currently Project Programming Lead on R6 Mobile at Ubi Montréal. I've also worked on 5 Assassin's Creed titles across gameplay, AI, and mission systems. Before all that I helped develop Blur, which no one played, but I'm proud of!

Lot of people I know and respect quoted in this piece for @gamedevelopers.bsky.social . Something I appreciate among the doom and gloom is also recognising when I have seen leaders in game dev chart paths around these traps. Great leaders help everyone around them do more with less.
How poor leadership slows down game development
No tool—AI or otherwise—can speed up game development if leaders don't rise to the occasion.

Also big thanks for offering a slipcase for Issues 1-3 for those of us who already bought them individually 💖
Very excited for A Profound Waste of Time: Issue 6! I hadn't realised I had missed Issues 4 & 5, so really appreciate @cazwis.bsky.social and the team offering a bundle of this second "trilogy" of the magazine

Can't recommend enough listening to the first season of Blowback, especially for non-Americans, to understood just how cruel and evil Cheney was,
It’s truly tragic how many of these US war criminals like Cheney never face justice and die in their peacefully in their homes in their 80s and 90s. I want to be happy he is dead but I am not. The million people he killed didnt get the luxury to die how he did.
ditto for someone's code, writing, music etc

"brilliant assholes" cost you so many great contributions from other people and are never ever worth it.
I truly can't stress this enough: No one's art is good enough to justify them being miserable to work with. Almost everyone I've worked with has been wonderful, but the handful of folks that weren't brought the whole team down by being egotistical, sexist, condescending, etc.

Look folks gen AI videos are out in the wild so if you weren't already being careful about sharing rage bait videos then now is a great time to start

If you can't trace a video back to a trusted source then I recommend leaving it where it is, like a slice of bologna you found on the street
Proudly cast votes for @transitionmontreal.bsky.social in our municipal elections 🤞

Someone needs to keep that woman away from space
I took a year off of work and have been finding that the number of games simply fills the time available regardless 😭
A thing I do every couple of years is get a cold and catch up on Doctor Who. Don't hate it, but it's very silly
Hot take but maybe firing thousands of software engineers, producers and testers and "replacing" them with AI wasn't such a great idea. These corporations have made their beds, and these DNS problems are lurking beneath them.
If you haven`t tried Black Mesa I really recommend it. They made Xen into one of the best parts of the game.

Hey folks! I hope ya’ll are well! Just a lil reminder that if you like my art (or Echo) you can support me on Ko-Fi as I look for work and try to get back on my feet. All money goes to paying bills. If you’re not in a position to help, sharing means a lot 💙 Thank you! ko-fi.com/belgianboolean
Stop putting people in charge of your Games division who don`t know the first thing about the games market and the people who play them.
I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.
Is an FTUE-focused review of a demo something indies would appreciate? I've been developing games for 15 years, most of them with fairly sophisticated data tracking hooks, so I understand the cost of a sharp drop-off of players who haven't even reached the part of your game that is unique or fun.
It's part of brain I struggle to turn off: I often put myself in the shoes of a "occasional gamer who has been recommended this demo by a friend" and probably 7/10 times that player would quit within minutes.
The list goes on - I know this kind of polish is something traditionally handled in the later stages of development, but if you're releasing a public demo with an hour of playable content it's a real shame if some players won't play beyond the first 10 minutes.
Something I've noticed with a lot of Steam Next Fest demos is how unpolished the FTUE is: pop-ups that overlap, default volume at a crazy high level, not having any on-screen instructions when you first take control of your character, main menus without a clear "click this to start" button...
Since Lucas posted his mega timelapse video last week I've been thinking about Obra Dinn again most of my waking hours, so this is arriving at the perfect time.
