One reason there tends to be more resources given to prestige and passion projects in movies than in some other forms of entertainment is that producers really care about winning Oscar’s in a way that record executives don’t care about Grammys or whatever and I think Variety of all people know that

"One Battle After Another" needs roughly $300 million to break even in theaters. The film's current $140 million gross is impressive for an original movie that's R rated and nearly three hours long, but the film is still tracking to lose $100 million.
