Day 13 - Skeleton

#31daysofgraves
An old weathered gravestone stands in a grassy churchyard surrounded by other headstones. The top of the stone is elaborately carved with a skull surrounded by leaves and vines, symbolizing mortality. The inscription below is partly in Latin and partly in English, its letters softened by time and moss. It reads in part: “In spem Beatae Resurrectionis Hic reconditum est quicquid Mortale fuit… Judith… Daughter of Matthew Nicholas…” and dates to October 6th, 1748. The lower portion mentions that Judith was aged 14 years. The stone’s age and ornate memento mori carving give it a haunting yet reverent beauty, evocative of 18th-century funerary art.

Latin translation:

“In the hope of a Blessed Resurrection,
Here is laid whatever was mortal
of Judith, daughter of Matthew Nicholas, Master of Arts,
of Shalford in the County of Surrey,
who returned her soul to God
on the 6th of October, 1748,
aged 14 years.”

The combination of Latin and English was common at that time for educated families, particularly clergy or scholars (the “A.M.” stands for Artium Magister, or Master of Arts).

A lamington is basically a square of vanilla cake filled with strawberry jam that’s dipped in chocolate icing and coated in coconut.

If I can make edible Nanaimo bars, you can definitely make delicious lamingtons!

This isn’t a trad lamington; it’s a fancy modern interpretation of one. Unless you’re in Australia or New Zealand - or you like to cook - you may find it hard tracking one down. They are great with tea, tho!

Today's afternoon tea ... Twinings Spearmint and Peppermint tea with a Ferrero lamington from Tokyo Lamington.
A Ferrero Rocher chocolate inspired, modern., square lamington sitting inside a cardboard holder, beside a cup of brown-coloured herbal tea in a glass cup. Both are sitting on a wooden coffee table top in front of a beige wall.

Blessed are the frogs, for they keep making authoritarians look incredibly stupid

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you’re under absolutely no obligation to justify yourself to anyone if you choose to spend the entire weekend drinking tea, reading books, and eating a scandalous amount of cinnamon rolls.

Sign of the day ... 🌳✌️
A canvas sign made up of tie-died strands in blue and rust on a white background with a teal circle with the following words in the centre in white text: GO INTO THE FOREST THERE IS LESS WI-FI BUT YOU WILL FEEL MORE CONNECTED.
