Just do it then! “I have instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible. If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding...”

Wow! It’s not even close. Food banks can’t keep up with the need…

Question: “How long is this sustainable.”

Food bank director: “It’s not… for every meal that a food bank provides, the SNAP program provides nine. There’s no way we can meet that gap.”

Cost to fund SNAP and keep 42 million people from starving:

$100 billion

Cost of lost revenue due to tax cuts for the richest Americans in the top 1%:

$100 billion

One is decried as "welfare." One is not.

Why?

Welch: "This has nothing to do with the shutdown. The law requires and the funds are available to continue SNAP right now without any interruption. So that is a decision the president is making on his own to allow people to go hungry."
Shark steak may look like a cheap meal but it comes at a cost: unsafe neurotoxin levels (mercury) sourced from threatened species. How can you tell which species is on your plate? In the US, you can't: specific labels are not required. Stay safe and protect our oceans.

“One in six Massachusetts residents, or about 667,000 households, receive SNAP benefits — including children, the elderly, and residents with disabilities.” - @bostonglobe.com

Can you imagine what the coming weeks will be like for the communities where 1/3 or more of its residents are on SNAP?
On Nov 1st, 40 million Americans will go hungry. “When you take SNAP away, the implications are cataclysmic,” Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot said. “I assume people are assuming that somebody’s going to stop it before it gets too bad. Well, it’s already too bad.”

It is, of course, critical to donate cash to local food banks.

While you're doing that, try to make a cash donation to a regional food depository. These folks are able to make efficient use of your dollars and ensure that underserved (and underresourced) communities are also supported.

1 in 8 Americans rely on SNAP…
HHS wants us to eat MORE red meat? MORE saturated fats? New guidelines will mean fattier meals for schools and the military. Why cherry pick studies that support what most scientists, doctors, and nutritionists say is dangerous and wrong?

With millions at risk of losing SNAP in the coming days, a reminder: hunger doesn't happen in isolation. When food assistance disappears, families use rent money to eat. Then come evictions and homelessness.

Housing, food, healthcare—it's all connected. Cut one thread and the whole thing unravels.
Stupid, cruel! SNAP federal food aid helps 1 out of every 8 US residents. In 1 more shutdown week, funding halts. Who will go hungry? Veterans, old folks, kids. Food retailers in poorer neighborhoods will lose customers. But there's billions in contingency reserves...
