I cannot believe people were losing their jobs for being mildly critical of Charlie Kirk and the president of the united states just went on tv and said "skill issue loser, RIP but I'm different"

Trump at the Charlie Kirk memorial event: "They fired sniper rifles at ICE agents, and me. But I made a turn at a good time. I made a turn at a good time. Charlie couldn't believe it, actually."

Yeah, there need to be VERY MANY MORE SFF books with middle aged widowed mothers as the heroes.

Bless Bujold for giving us Ista as well as Cordelia.

and eventually has a near-pants-befoulling reminder that Cazaril very much CAN handle a sword actually, kthxby, just makes me *hug* myself in glee.

(The Hallowed Hunt is a different kind of book, and didn’t resonate with me as much, but these first two are absolute bangers.)

Yasss! This is a regular relisten for me, along with The Paladin Of Souls.

I SO enjoy a humble-but-severely-underestimated-highly-capable-badass protagonist; the moment when that idiot catspaw guy tries to provoke Cazaril into a duel in some corridor,

Sometimes there'll be a joke written by someone who's been dead for tens, hundreds of years & i'll stop and think about another human reaching through time to make another human laugh, long after they're gone, and it's so beautiful it makes me well up.

her powers and makes her into a vessel for babies, has laced that love with bitter resentment.

(As I said, I don’t read the girls’ relationship as Sapphic in nature because one really reads as straight to me and the other as ace, but there’s scope for fanfic if one wanted.)

I really am enjoying this. The protagonist has this genuine sweetheart of a love interest, but the book is pretty clear on the point that LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH.

Her mother married for love, but the corrosive misogyny baked into their society, which mandates that she wear a literal collar that crushes

The magical worldbuilding is a little like that in Bujold’s Penric & Desdemona stories, with magical skills hinging upon housing a spirit of power within one’s own soul - but it’s a perilous business, and while the spirits aren’t evil, they ARE dangerous.

The tragedy of LLMs is that the designers spent all their effort making them believable before making them correct.

constantly , i mean , CONSTANTLY , Astounded watching professionals talk about using LLMs and prompt engineering as if they are dealing with a reasoning machine. Phrasing their terms with subjective qualifiers and believing that this is giving them results. FMGWaC ! the machine has no reasoning!

Write the book you would like to see someone pull from a higgledy piggledy pile in a secondhand shop 63 years after your death and say, "This looks fucking weird. I think I will buy it for Joan."

And on the OTHER other hand, the protagonist’s relationship with her love interest’s sister is actually given more weight than the inconvenient burgeoning romance. Not in a sapphic way - it’s a slightly prickly alliance between two girls trying to escape their respective fates and helping each

On the one hand you’ve got Bridgerton vibes, complete with a wealthy & handsome Labrador-esque Good Boi PoC hero for whom the protagonist is unwillingly falling; otoh she’s facing the magical equivalent of cliterodectomy or footbinding the moment she marries, & she’s urgently trying to forge a

I’m relistening to @clpolk.blacksky.app ‘s “Midnight Bargain”, and it really is a cracker. It’s a Regency-ish Romance-ish which posits a system of magic which could theoretically empower girls as much as boys, then casts a feminist lens upon the ways that patriarchy retains its control of women.
