If you care about keeping health insurance affordable for those who must purchase it on the exchange, call your congressperson’s office. Staffers are still doing unpaid work in DC while House members are getting a paid vacation. Would be nice to see more hold town halls in their districts.
Candidate quality matters. This ain’t it. And Janet Mills is good but voters have already spoken saying they want a new generation of leadership — not a 77-year-old first-term senator. Until Democratic leadership gets this message, I suspect they will continue to lose. Listen. To. Voters.

How does someone become an anti-vaxxer or come to believe that chemotherapy is more dangerous than cancer?

I’ve spent all year working with Alexander Stockton and The NY Times trying to answer that question. Here’s our findings.

We are living in a dystopian surveillance state à la Orwell’s “1984.” Cameras on everything are an evil of our modern society and are being used against us daily. There’s a reason why law enforcement must get warrants. It protects our constitutional rights. Without our rights, we have nothing.
ICE had access to a nationwide network of AI-enabled surveillance cameras that constantly track vehicles', and by extension peoples, movements without a warrant www.404media.co/ice-secret-s...

Shorter Mike Johnson:

Beating up a woman isn’t “really serious.”
Q: This has been reported for a while. Cory Mills was accused of beating a girlfriend in his DC apt. Are you concerned about these allegations?

JOHNSON: You have to ask Rep. Mills about that. He's been a faithful colleague. I don't know the details. Let's talk about things that are really serious

Indiana University cuts IDS print entirely, hours after firing student media director

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.
“POLITICO obtained an image taken during a virtual meeting that shows the flag pinned to what appears to be a cubicle wall behind Angelo Elia, one of (GOP Rep. Dave) Taylor’s staffers.”
EXCLUSIVE: Capitol Police are investigating a swastika found in GOP Rep. Dave Taylor’s office.

“The content of that image does not reflect the values or standards of this office, my staff, or myself, and I condemn it in the strongest terms," Taylor said in a statement.

When political leaders signify that racism and antisemitism are acceptable, young people hear that message and this is what happens.
POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

Our border must be secure. Criminals must be deported. But immigrants add to our communities and I don’t see why the ones who are already here can’t stay. They have built a life here and contribute to their communities. They add so much. We are fortunate to have them here.
Immigrants are terrified because of this approach and fear is palpable and contagious. If ICE treated people with humanity, everything would be better. Not perfect, not even good, but not this horror show day after day.
I used to be a cops reporter. I did a ride-along with a man who turned out to be the best officer I’ve seen. An expert at de-escalation. Communication skills were excellent, type B personality. His respectful approach kept tensions down. Of course, it won’t always work but most of the time, it will.

The thing about this story: It is, in fact, a hyper-local story, and focuses on hyper-local figures and activists.

Except it also involves comments from the Archbishop of Chicago.

And from a U.S. Senator.

And from Pope Leo himself, who is, of course, a native Chicagoan.

They're all involved.
NEW: As ICE presence increases in Chicago — home to the third-largest Catholic diocese in the U.S. — Catholics and allies are pushing back.

The use of AI to marionette a woman whose tortured existence was spent trying to carve her own life and identity out of the space men forced her into is both damningly macabre and a surprisingly perfect encapsulation of the problems with this ghoulish use of technology.
I hate how Cheryl Hines is being asked to explain her husband RFK Jr.’s thoughts and actions on her book tour. I understand why interviewers ask but husbands and wives are two separate people. She doesn’t control her husband, so why is she answering for his terrible behavior? Makes no sense.

Q: We've seen images out of Chicago of federal agents shooting faith leaders with pepper balls and arresting journalists. Where's the limit for you on what's acceptable conduct by federal agents?

MIKE JOHNSON: I've not seen them cross the line yet.
