Holding her liquor is not one of them.
Spilling down the apartment steps out onto the sidewalk, she giggles as she rebounds off of one the towering trees lining the boulevard.
"Oops, sorry," she apologizes the centuries old oak sincerely. Her words are only a little bit slurred.
"I'm sure it will survive," Ben tells her, wrapping an arm around her waist to keep her steady as they head to the car.
"I hope so. That was so fun wasn't it? Parties are fun."
Every introverted bone Ben's body disagrees, but he doesn't dare say so out loud.
"They are. Finn and Poe's new place is nice."
Breaking free of his hold, she spreads her arms and twirls, skirt floating up around her thighs. "Sooooooo nice! That living room is amaz-"
A crack in the sidewalk nearly sends her tumbling to the ground.

"Okay, you've lost walking privileges," he announces, scooping her up and settling her against one hip, supporting her with a hand under her ass.
Wrapping her legs around his waist, she gently pokes his cheek with a purple-tipped index finger,
"You're my favourite."
He keeps walking, "Oh yeah? Favourite what?
Mode of transportation?"
She lays her head on his shoulder, rubbing her face against the softness of his sweater like an affectionate cat. "Everything," she sighs. "Ben is my favourite everything."
Unbidden tears well up in his eyes. He had learned quickly that in the hierarchy of his family, he ranked last. And he had stopped trying to change that a long time ago. To be the favourite of someone as extraordinary as Rey is more than he has dared to hope for.
Dipping his head, he presses a lingering kiss to her hair, "You're my favourite everything, too, sweetheart."

I had an instance as a commuter that the earbuds I had been gifted stopped working without me realising, so I broadcasted a steamy bit of Greys Anatomy to the carriage 🫣. Ever since then I will not be budged from a physical cable I can see is connected!

The fabric of her collar scratches against the back of her neck. She hates the stupid uniform the guards are required to wear with a burning passion, but it's a necessary evil.
Checking the hygrometer on the wall by the door, she writes the number down on the clipboard next to it before she continues on into the next room, the heavy rubber soles of her boots echoing on the waxed parquet floor.
Passing rows of gilt framed paintings and bronze statues on raised plinths, she stops in front of one particular work.
Monk by the Sea. Soft moonlight filters in from the skylight above, suffusing the lustrous surface of the centuries old oil painting with an ethereal glow.
It's her favourite work in the entire museum.
The hazy, indistinct figure of the monk, so frail and insignificant compared to the vast, untamed forces of nature that surround him.
Rey dreamed of the ocean as a child and this piece so perfectly captures the combination of awe and melancholy she felt standing before the Pacific for the first time that it makes her chest ache.

She's well aware that it's beyond reckless, but when the time comes, she's not sure she'll be able to leave it behind. If Rose knew what she was considering, she'd ream Rey out. The painting is too well known, it will bring down too much heat on them. The plan is to take high quality works from medium-famous artists. They'll fetch generous prices without attracting a lot of attention from the authorities. Stealing Monk would put them at a Gardner-level heist, something they are actively avoiding.
Despite the risk, she doesn't know if she can let it go. The painting haunts her in a way no other work of art ever has. She wants it so badly-not to re-sell on the black market, but to keep for her very own.
"You don't want that one," a deep voice says just off to her left. She jolts and spins around to find Ben Solo, the 19th century European Art curator, so beautiful he looks like one of the Hellenistic sculptures on the main floor come to life, gazing at the Friedrich.
"What?" Was he reading her thoughts somehow?
He gestures with his chin, "That painting, little thief, you don't want to take it."

Their first date is entirely fake—a calculated, seven-course PR stunt staged for the Holonet. Rey is campaigning for Jakkuvian representation in the Senate and a connection with an old political family will open countless doors. Ben is recruiting for a sorely understaffed Academy and needs to demonstrate that the New Jedi Principles don’t forbid romantic attachments.

Beneath the romantic façade for the media, it’s supposedly all about mutual convenience. Yet he’s half in love with her by the salad course, charmed by her wide eyes as she shoves each new appetizer in her mouth and more than a little aroused by the way she moans when she tries stuffed candlewick flowers for the first time.

Worse still—though it does amplify the Holonet buzz a thousandfold—the date technically ends in disaster when they’re attacked by Hutt cartel assassins during dessert. Only half in love? No, he’s a goner the instant Rey hikes up her shimmersilk dress, seizes the bottle of starlight brandy out of the hands of their stunned waiter, and smashes it over the head of a would-be assassin.

Then she wields the jagged remnants of the bottle with deadly precision to dispatch two more goons, moving in perfect concert with him as his lightsaber carves through the rest. He’s fought alongside with Jedi, ex-Rebels, smugglers, even his mom on one or two dire occasions, and it’s never—never—felt like this before, like the Force is one with them and they are one with each other.

Afterwards, Rey insists on taking the rest of their dessert to go, and she’s delighted when the restaurant offers them extra quinberry cake, on the house. Ben hands her his share, equally delighted by her fierce blush when he murmurs that he has a different sort of dessert in mind.

Head tilted, he watches the girl behind the polished wood counter ring up his books with interest.
Her name is Rey, according to the tag pinned to her 'I like big books and I cannot lie sweater.
She's cute, he thinks to himself.
All dimpled smiles, big hazel eyes, an adorable dusting of freckles across her cheeks and the bridge of her upturned nose. He finds he doesn't want to look away from her.
She lets out an excited little exclamation when she gets to the hardback with the image of a Tang dynasty earthenware horse on the cover.
"Oh, I love Kay, and Under Heaven is one of his best."
Typically, Ben shuts down any attempts at small talk by store staff by wielding his most severe glare. It works one hundred percent of the time. He could listen to this girl's dulcet tones for days, though, so he does his best to keep the conversation going.

He leans in, maybe more than is necessary, to tap his card on the reader, "I haven't read any of his stuff before, but with that kind of endorsement, it's going right to the top of my pile."
"You'll have to come back and tell m- tell us," she circles a hand in the air to encompass the entire shop, "how you liked it."
Her cheeks flush an enchanting shade of pink as she passes the brown paper bag to him.
Ben's about to give an undoubtedly suave response, but before he can their fingers meet on the ribbon handles. The moment his skin brushes against hers, his right forearm starts to burn.
The bag falls with a heavy thud as he and Rey stare at each other, wide-eyed and panting.
He doesn't need to pull up his sleeve to know that the skin there will now bear a soulmate mark.
Rey takes a step towards him, gold-green eyes luminous in the bright afternoon sunlight coming through the windows.
"Oh," she murmurs.
Yeah, his addled brain agrees. Oh.
