This is correct.
The government parties are trying to renege on solemn assurances given then to us so that we could approve those constitutional amendments. Now they insist the assurances are not legally binding.

Connolly: “In voting ‘no’ we had to vote a second time on Nice and on Lisbon and we were given absolute, solemn promises in relation to our neutrality that seem to mean nothing at the moment.

Because we are now going down a road of saying that the Triple Lock is not a core part of our neutrality.”

I heard on the radio that the cost of rebuilding Gaza is estimated to be £40-50 billion. The cost of HS2 is likely to be £40-80 billion. That seems a strange equivalence; the homes, businesses and infrastructure of 2 million people, versus a railway line from London to Birmingham

'You say Russia should pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine. Do you believe Israel should pay for the reconstruction of Gaza?'

During an EU Commission press briefing, a journalist questioned the double standards of European policy, asking whether Israel should also be held accountable for rebuilding Gaza — just as the EU demands Russia
The question was met with silence, as the EU spokesperson declined to comment.

Fintan O'Toole on preserving an alternative space by electing Catherine Connolly TD and President.
joenoonan.bsky.social
“What Connolly would do is keep the presidency going as some kind of alternative space in the State’s official life.

The Áras would continue to function as a counterweight to Govt Bdgs, a space in which a wider set of Irish realities can be recognised.

Can we really afford to have no such space?”
Fintan O'Toole on the candidates.

If you're not from here, this is not some moribund area off at the fringes of town, it's one of the main thoroughfares in the city centre. Shoppers and tourists get to look at this every day. It's been like this for decades. This is what sensible politicians with sensible policies have gifted us.

Any reference to the Special Criminal Court should, for full context, reference the UN Human Rights Committee's recommendation that it should be (more or less) abolished.

It always comes up during elections and, let's be honest, is really a 'do you support the IRA'–coded question

I remain a bit ambivalent on Catherine Connolly as a Presidential candidate, though less so than her unimpressive opponent.

But the latest bit, where voting No to various EU treaties is treated as a shocking break with norms is particularly stupid.

These were majority positions, more than once.
A bit table showing the breakdown of votes for the first Lisbon Treaty vote. The No side won. A bit table showing the breakdown of votes for the first Nice Treaty vote. The No side won.
