Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese: this is a story of an Indigenous man and his struggles with addictions and racism that trace back to his childhood when he was taken from his family and placed in residential school. Richard Wagamese (RIP) is a phenomenal storyteller.
21 Things You May Not Know about the Indian Act: only 200 pages but I had to take multiple breaks because this made me physically ill. Created in 1876 to fully assimilate (read eliminate) Indigenous people, it is still in place today. The last amendment was in 2019 AFTER this book was published.
Kukum by Michel Jean: this is a love story between a white orphan and an Indigenous man, but also between a white woman and Innu culture. The Innu people were nomads because the land can't belong to anyone. White settlers took that away from them and their children too.
From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle: I recommend this book to everyone, especially if they work in healthcare. Jesse's story is so inspirational and he had to overcome so much intergenerational trauma and addictions struggles to get to where he is today (professor of Métis studies in Toronto!)
It's Truth and Reconciliation Day!

Here's some books I recommend (details for each book in the comments):
- From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle (memoir)
- Kukum by Michel Jean (fiction)
- 21 Things You May Not Know about the Indian Act by Bob Joseph (non-fiction)
- Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese

Val wants everyone to know that as the lead marketing co-founder, their professional skillset mostly involves them yelling GAY MAGAZINE at people when all other words fail her. It's an important task, someone must do it.

Join TEAM NO BURNOUT

(maybe some burnout, as a treat)
Do you kick your feet over chosen family stories? Do you yearn about generation ships lost to time? Are you haunted by multiverse and all the different iterations of your love/nemesis?

Heartlines is growing! We’re looking for
- A poetry editor
- 2-3 submission readers

Looking until we're not 🫀
The dichotomy of me today is being sad that I won't get to work with Jess at Heartlines Spec but happy that I'll get to work with them at OTHERSIDE 🥲
We are so thrilled to announce that Jess Cho will be joining the OTHERSIDE team as a Poetry Editor! Jess is a Rhysling Award-winning author with work in khōréō, Fantasy Magazine, Fireside Fiction, Apparition, Nightmare, and elsewhere. They can't wait to read your work when we open in January!

On August 28, an internal EPSB memo was leaked to the public. It contained the list of more than 200 books. The WGA's Board strongly urges both the Government of Alberta and EPSB to revisit and rescind their decisions and stand up for the democratic rights of all readers and writers.
Come work with us at Heartlines Spec ❤️❤️❤️

I only learned recently that flight attendants only get paid for time in the air! Even though sometimes there are delays before takeoff--they are NOT paid for this time! Very unfair!
Canadians facing issues with air canada - CUPE IS NOT YOUR ENEMY! Striking workers want fair wages! It's the company rescheduling and cancelling your flights because they don't want to engage fairly! And shame on CTV for dishonest reporting on this strike
