Phonics is complex- in English the system is contextual and statistical. There is a probability that a letter or group of letters will make a particular sound, based on the other letters that surround them and where they are in the word. Syllables are similarly abstract.

If we take seriously the idea that ys humans avoid others' trauma- unconsciously- because it hurts so much, then it is likely that as a society we often fail to recognise or respond to trauma.
