The only really surprising thing about this is that the chats were leaked. Open racism and bigotry are the mainstream positions in the GOP at the moment. They feel liberated from the tyranny of being decent human beings. Like I said the other day, the Alt-right won and this is what they wanted.
‘I love Hitler’: Leaked messages expose Young Republicans’ racist chat
Thousands of private messages reveal young GOP leaders joking about gas chambers, slavery and rape.

"Hokayem and others also worry about Trump’s attention span."

The horror of depending on this man for something as complex and important as Gaza.

One rule for me, another for thee, ad nauseam.

I cannot be 100% sure, but based on my eye sight struggling to read the font, I also suspect it is a size 11 version of 53 pages, i.e. longer than that/word count. I'm reading the 53 pages (not the appendices) and telling the editor to can the rest please, as 29 pages of appendices is ridiculous.

Reviewing paper revision for major journal. Letter to reviewers is 25 pages long. New paper is 53 pages long. Appendices with additional data are another 29 pages long. In total, the document is 107 pages long. RIP my working day. (Yes reviewing is important, but can we please chill w/ mega papers).

every single tech idea is like “soon our robots will be capable of playing catch with your kid, freeing you up to spend more time working on your employers’ spreadsheets”

Thank you - I did see you weren't the author, but I was hoping you might know something I didn't (I lived in the UK for 18 years but moved 2 years ago)! Incidentally, I took the Trenitalia to Milan from/to Paris and it was super nice (though SNCF keeps nice trains on that line & a comparative price)

Hello Tony (if I may), v interesting thank you. I don't quite get point about UK govt supporting competition for Eurostar, but not within the UK - the UK train system is already one w/ privatised companies competing on different lines? (Tho I have to say French trains are far superior service-wise)

Suffering through Peter Thiel's Zero to One for a paper. On the plus side though, the visionary had this to say in 2014: "even if strong AI is a real possibility rather than an imponderable mystery, it won't happen anytime soon: replacement by computers is a worry for the 22nd century". Yay? 🤷‍♀️😶‍🌫️

Teaching the recent HBR piece on AI slop in my strategy class this week. This'll be the tip of the iceberg soon, especially as consulting's existentialist crisis speeds up their cost cutting, which will inevitably mean more pressures to be productive (i.e. less time to write/research/fact check AI).

Thank you & of course they won't. The left coalition won the parliamentary elections. Instead of honouring that, Macron appointed three mostly right PMs. In continuing to defer to RN's issues, he strenghtened them. And France's issues got worse. Even if left gets a PM now, it's a poisoned chalice 🤷‍♀️

I really really appreciate your work Henry (if I may), but I don't think this is an issue France's left created or are responsible for. Macron has made France ungovernable.

In this remarkable opinion, Judge Young concludes it violates the First Amendment for government to deport people because it dislikes their speech, and hopes to chill others from engaging in similar speech.

I'm skimming, but this paragraph stood out:
And there’s the issue of masks. This Court has listened carefully to the reasons given by Öztürk’s captors for masking- up and has heard the same reasons advanced by the defendant Todd Lyons, Acting Director of ICE. It rejects this testimony as disingenuous, squalid and dishonorable. ICE goes masked for a single reason -- to terrorize Americans into quiescence.

There is a difference between righteous anger, directed at injustice, and hateful anger, directed at those who are different. Authoritarian regimes deliberately conflate the two to silence criticism and create false equivalence. It's important we don't let those in power succeed in this endeavor.

This is my regular reminder to everyone that jstor is open to the general public now; a free account there will give you access to 100 papers a year.

regrettably if you try to point this out online you'll get yelled out by 79208 journalists going OH SO YOU WANT JOURNALISTS TO STARVE??? even if you're, say, a journalist yourself, and point out that while there are clearly no easy answers, the status quo isn't exactly working for society

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)

"Whether each new rule is well meaning or plainly obstructive, the cumulative burden still weighs on growth." Not on health or quality of life or infrastructure or inequality - on growth. Says it all really. Given how we live with all this 'problematic' red tape, I can only imagine the alternative 😶‍🌫️
