My talk at Garrett College last night focused mostly on a 5-year-old American citizen and her American mother and grandmother, imprisoned by the Nazis in WW2. They were then separated for almost 10 years.
Still think it can't happen here?

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

Last month, a Mainer found 250 missing ballots for a GOP-backed referendum in her Amazon package. Republicans quickly pointed to it as proof of election insecurity, but now some suspect the stunt may have been staged by the referendum's own backers. https://bit.ly/42DKdwZ

Gov. Pritzker: "The Insurrection Act is called the Insurrection Act for a reason — there has to be an insurrection in order for [Trump] to be allowed to invoke it. He can say anything he wants, but if the Constitution means anything...the Insurrection Act cannot be invoked."

Sens. Schumer, Merkley, Murray, and Peters are calling for the resignation of OMB Director Russell Vought.

"By impounding billions of dollars … and aggressively pursuing the illegal use of pocket rescissions, Vought has done everything in his power to gut the federal government piece by piece."

In Chicago, four vehicles descended and eight ICE agents moved in to kidnap a child.

She screams, “I’m 15,” as ICE yanks her from the car and kneels on her neck.

This is not about immigration enforcement.

It's about terrorizing Americans.

In Alabama, incarcerated workers in a work-release program must take jobs at private companies—but 40% of their wages are docked as a “labor-trafficking fee.” A recent lawsuit brought by incarcerated people argues this is a modern form of convict leasing.

The reason Mike Johnson is able to keep the House closed and not pass bills to pay the military or fund the government is because Trump is going to circumvent congress and illegally steal that money from other government programs. All to avoid releasing the Epstein files.

The end of federal enforcement of special ed laws. Some states - including MN - will likely be ok. But a lot of disabled kids in a lot of states are going to lose the education that federal law and decades of jurisprudence say they are owed.

Thankfully, some of yesterday's CDC firings have been rescinded.

But this should be a major scandal, not business as usual in this shitshow of an administration. It's either spectacular incompetence or an effort to make even politically untouchable positions feel precarious to those in them.

100s of #CDC employees were notified Friday they were being fired — RIF'd. The firings cross multiple parts of the agency, endangering its core mission of keeping Americans safe.
Saturday, some were informed they were RIF'd in error.

Government shutdown rhetoric begs the question: Should the sick and injured be denied emergency care?

Since the presidency of Ronald Reagan, federal law has required hospitals to provide emergency treatment to all who need it, regardless of whether they are U.S. citizens.

This isn’t fearmongering — it’s reality. Hospital-acquired COVID can delay care or cost you your health — even your life.

Infection control measures — masks, ventilation, testing, and staff/patient protections — should be standard care in every healthcare setting.

Some day you’ll be in hospital for surgery or chemotherapy or with another illness & a nurse, or doctor or visitor at the next bed, or the patient opposite you will give you a Covid infection & your treatment will get delayed & your life will be put at unnecessary risk.
