Ilberd is one of the few antagonists in the game who not only achieves his goal but ends up being proven right by the narrative. His methods were awful and resulted in a lot of people dying, but if he hadn't done what he did, the other city-states wouldn't have intervened to free Ala Mhigo.

I like to imagine Merlwyb was pissed when she found out Zanel has been holed up in Ishgard since the Calamity

Zanel was her WoL, so she must have been frantic when she went unaccounted for after Cartenau. After 5 years, they likely gave up the search and assumed she disappeared with the other WoLs.

Forcing myself to find the motivation to make this comic.

The idea is set on the day Aymeric is appointment lord commander. Zanel looks for Zephirin to offer her condolences, as he's her friend. However, by the end of their talk, a memory of Nael van Darnus resurfaces and leaves her with worry.

This song, though it can apply to all her allies, is mostly dedicated to the kinship she feels with the Warrior of Light as a former one herself. Zanel will always stand by the WoL as she considers them a dear friend.
