Thinking back on Watchmen (the original graphic novel), I think Osymandias was way too optimistic about humanity. #Politics #USPol #Books

Trump’s everlasting peace in the Middle East held for 24 hours, so now he has to defend Hamas killing people to keep his Nobel Prize hopes alive.

Trump just bombed six more people in the Caribbean, for a total of 27 civilians who have been killed so far by the US military. It’s illegal for the military to target civilians who do not pose an immediate threat. This is murder.
U.S. Military Kills Another 6 People in 5th Caribbean Strike, Trump Says
In a social media post, the president said the people aboard a boat were suspected of smuggling drugs for an unspecified group his team had labeled terrorists.

the broad public does not like chaos and disorder and everything you can do to emphasize that it is the federal government that is responsible for chaos and disorder is a point in your favor. it’s classic nonviolent confrontation!

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.

You liked the movie The Martian? JPL were the heroes who figured out how to bring him back to Earth. That’s how awesome they are, they were written into one of the most popular sci-fi books/movies of the past decade.

Something I just sort of wonder about is why everybody immediately rushes to fall for Donald Trump’s bits, with absolutely no idea of their staying power even 6 to 12 weeks from now. You don’t have to immediately credit the guy on announcement day

I think it matters that to whatever degree we want to credit Trump with doing this as-yet-tenuous deal, forget the ten months of ongoing support for genocide, the support for bombing Tehran, etc.; Trump helped accomplish this by telling Palestinians if they didn’t sign on he’d see them all destroyed
davidaustinwalsh.bsky.social
Genuinely don’t think our political discourse is capable of talking about how Donald Trump—*Donald Trump*—just halted an ongoing genocide.

Ah, time for a new generation to learn that other Arab governments don’t really give a flying fuck about the Palestinian people. They’re useful redirection of their citizens’ anger and frustration.

I like how they found one of my old posts that pointed out the Gaza blockade, although mostly due to Israel, was also due to Egypt thinking Palestinians are all terrorists

Pointing out how both Israel and the surrounding Arab countries didn’t care about Palestinians makes you a Zionist

Once upon a time I had a green card. I used to clip it to my passport. Immigration agent told me that was a bad idea. I should keep them apart and store my green card in a safe place because it was such a hassle to replace it.

Everyday I get yelled at by people insisting that “zio” is a political philosophy and not a slur invented by David Duke.

I remember thinking on October 7 “oh nonono, Palestinian civilians will get pounded to the ground. And Hamas wants it to happen.”

Then a few weeks later telling an acquaintance that he better support a two state solution. One state already exists and it ain’t Palestine.

So basically this is Iranian Hostage Crisis 2.0, just with a 9-month delay in the payoff for no particular reason.

This seems like confirmation
Then Mr. Trump won the presidency back, and the Biden administration was determined to get a cease-fire in place by January, before it left office. It drafted a peace plan, much of which was quite similar to the “20 point plan” Mr. Trump recently issued. There was slow progress: More than 130 hostages had been released by the time the January cease-fire took place.

“We handed over a cease-fire that silenced the guns, had hostages coming out and aid going in, along with a day-after plan to make it permanent,” Mr. Blinken said. But when the new administration took over, “the moment was squandered,” he added. “Israel and Hamas went back to war for eight months.”

Israeli officials tell a different story. Mr. Biden was a lame duck, they noted, and disengaged. Mr. Trump was a known entity, less likely to lecture Mr. Netanyahu in private or public. They put their money on a new president, and a new negotiating team

Before the pandemic cancelled a research trip, I was going to look at how food in a Eastern European area was influenced by people movements AND how they influenced cuisine in the Americas in subsequent migration.
There are almost no national foods that haven’t been influenced by human migration.

English food has incorporated Indian dishes and ingredients. The US version of Chinese food has diverged into its own thing. They developed Tex-Mex which is tasty but different from Mexican food.
Japanese and Korean versions of southern fried chicken!!!
