I was so sad to hear of his passing. I knew he was sick for a while, but it's still sad to lose a furbaby.

And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:

The frogs have landed in Chicago!
Protestor in a frog suit and an anti-Ice sign with what I believe to be a Pokémon character on a street corner in Rogers Park.

No, what??? I'd rather live in Vancouver than (checks notes) Greeley

Lord give us the Democrats that Republicans warn us about.

Thune: "If the Democrats had won the majority, they probably would've tried to nuke the filibuster. And then you'd have four new senators from Puerto Rico and DC, you'd have a packed Supreme Court, you'd have abortion on demand ... "

To all trans PhD students/postdocs entering this year's job market: no, it's *not* you, the faculty members that keep telling you there's great opportunities and then pointing to jobs in places where you would be deeply personally/family/medically unsafe *ARE* being deeply insensitive.

BTW, if any of my followers have suggestions for books along the lines of "Qualitative Methods for Dummies," I'm all ears.

The US is going to host a Qatari air base in Idaho which is somehow fine but Mexican immigrants are somehow not
diygeochemist.bsky.social
Absolutely!

One of the reasons the paper I've been working hasn't been published yet is that part of what we are looking at is *not* quantitative (at least not 100%), and I struggle with doing proper analyses of qualitative stuff.

My soapbox for today is that scientists need to be exposed to qualitative methods.

Ok looks like the Nobel award winner may be a South American “democracy pursuing “ woman but not, perhaps, a political role model. 🤷

Still immensely, profoundly glad that the award wasn’t given to somebody even, even less deserving, and even louder.

I have yet to match the brilliance of my 2023 autumnal dog photo
A happy dog stands on a bed of fallen leaves. Behind him, the glow of the afternoon sun illuminates yellow leaves on the trees.

That was the first time I could move far away from my kids' dad, who'd stalked and harassed me so much that I got a protective order (but still feared for my life). He was scared enough of NYC that he'd never go there so I was doubly safe from him there.

People worry about the wrong things.

It's not *just* rural folks. My first job post-PhD was in Queens. Lots of people I knew back in (Denver metro-area) Colorado were vocally afraid for my safety. They didn't believe me when I said I felt perfectly safe there, safe enough to walk back from the subway station to my apartment after dark.

People who live in big cities and have MAGA relatives in rural and suburban areas are getting deja vu, that's for sure.

We've all had conversations with relatives who insist they know better than us what our cities are like. That we must be deluded not to see the constant riots and muggings.

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

I would go further and say that everyone deserves basic necessities to live whether they have a job or not.

Ew ew ew just for an ad for one of those AI assistants in which a woman asks it to write a haiku about her cat.

You can’t write a 3 line, 17 syllable poem about your cat?????

What is being alive for if not writing tiny little poems about your cat??!!

Add this to my joker file. Good lord.

One of the most perverse ideas on the anti-trans side is that trans people are instantly affirmed and celebrated by everyone when they come out and that acceptance is driving a social contagion.

It's the ultimate form of gaslighting against our community.

Pew Survey: Only 31% Of Trans People Report Being Accepted By Their Parents
The survey comes as transgender people experience a legal assault from the far-right in the United States.
