Journalists as a collective must take a stand to decide if a 200-word AI summary of a meeting you already attended and (assumedly) paid attention to, is worth destroying our planet and feeding into a craze that's directly tied to the destruction of democracy.

I say no.

I Tested How Well AI Tools Work for Journalism
Some tools were sufficient for summarizing meetings. For research, the results were a disaster.

not this headline..............
my ex probably feels underbabied without me lbr
"underbabied" is how some men feel when they don't have a grown woman to take care of their every whim and need
Dr Oz: "Turns out that about 1/3 families don't have the number of babies they desire. They're under-babied. So this president committed to address that during the campaign and he's delivering on that today."

Just an incredible opening to this NYT interview with Zohran Mamdani:

You sit, according to the polls, on the cusp of a historic political victory. You would be the youngest mayor in a century. You’d be New York City’s first Muslim mayor. You’d be its first democratic socialist mayor.

I wouldn’t actually be the first democratic socialist mayor.

Who would it be?

David Dinkins was a member of D.S.A., he identified also as a democratic socialist.

Thank you for the correction.

Very welcome.
oh i'd rather stub my toe every single hour for the rest of my life than have to interact w this shit
new: The Washington Post is rolling out a beta version of Ripple, its A.I.-enabled opinion product. "The intention is to provide a range of recent perspectives from other publishers across America."
being a journalist/writer is such a pain sometimes, but other times i remind myself how lucky i am to create for a living when a 500-word story on a small biz lifts my spirits ✨
the existential dread is dreading this fine day

#BREAKING The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refuses to undo an order blocking deployment of National Guard troops within Illinois.

"We conclude that the district court's factual findings … were not clearly erroneous, and that the facts do not justify the President's actions in Illinois."

Media is worse, journalism is worse, and the stories we tell are worse when we limit the access to telling them to people who can afford to live in the two or three biggest cities in the country.

This corporate decision is--and I want to be subtle and even-handed in my phrasing so as not to lose any of the important nuances--stupid.

remote work is here to stay, and if media conglomerates like RS's owner continue to act like we still live in a pre-covid world, they will lose great reporters like Tim

(i am sure Tim will be onto bigger and better things and it ain't that deep, but it felt like a good opportunity to say this)

Another day in America where you have to check your over-priced food to make sure it's not being recalled for whatever the thing is.

Today's recall is ready rice. Fortunately, neither of my packages are included, but yours may be.

Then there's Russ Taylor. "It's just a vehicle. So it's ironic that it would even become a political statement."

(Editor's note: Taylor was plead guilty to conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding in the January 6 attack. He was later pardoned by Trump.)

Shortly before 9 pm, Department of Homeland Security agents were seen shoving a protester to the ground while trying to clear the driveway so vehicles could exit the ICE facility. Another was shoved immediately afterward, and shot with pepper balls. Later, tear gas blanketed the block.
