If one of your pearls says "Hitler was bad" it's actually okay and even cool to clutch it
radleybalko.bsky.social
Fascinating. Politico notes that when notified of the texts, many state-level Republicans fired or condemned these cretins. Now Vance emerges to excuse the racism, and calls the reaction to it "pearl clutching."

He seems determined to purge the party of its last enclaves of decency.
‘College Group Chat’: JD Vance Dismisses ‘Pearl Clutching’ Over Young Republicans Leak to Attack Jay Jones
Liberals hit back at Vance's blunt dismissal of racist, antisemitic and misogynistic messages leaked from a Young Republicans group chat.

Statement from the president of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trip to Egypt:

“It is unprecedented that Canadian media be entirely excluded from a Canadian prime minister’s foreign trip.”

I agree it would be nice to get him on the record speaking to that point directly and only that point, without being able to hide behind another question. But mostly as a gotcha. The way he answered this question already answers the other, sadly. He had the opportunity to get it right.
deandettloff.bsky.social
(Pardon the typos here but I think the point is clear enough.)

What if we had an opposition party capable of maintaining news coverage by insisting they would try people involved in what is obviously murder for murder?
deandettloff.bsky.social
Fair enough, so let's say he doesn't think shooting clergy in the head with pepper balls doesn't cross a line that warrants congressional oversight.
deandettloff.bsky.social
I think he told us in the answer. He doesn't think that crosses the line. We should be saying Johnson thinks it's okay to shoot a pastor in the head with pepper balls because that's what he said. If he feels differently he can say that instead, but there's no reason to give him a benefit of doubt.

Though I really wouldn't mind liberals holding onto a grievance instead of all too often drifting rightward.

Progressive evangelicals have also formed important voting blocs for Chavismo, Lula, and other lefty politics across Latin America, opposing right wing evangelicals. That's a unique wrinkle that's not really present in US evangelicalism, and gets lost by universalizing it.

In fact they do! Though minoritarian and located primarily in the Global South (like Catholic liberation theology). Juan Stam is one interesting bridge figure, a Wheaton/Fuller grad who taught in Costa Rica. His 2003 column on George W. Bush:

Have to agree, the man is a testament to the dangers of doing philosophy unsupervised. Don't handle this hazardous material without proper safety equipment (a learning community, other readers who aren't sycophants, the arduous task of building a knowledge base, basic literacy, etc.).

Yes there have been big changes in the US too. Catholics were historically a reliable Democrat bloc, and the only two Catholic presidents have been Catholic. But times have changed. Imo the racial divide across the Church via immigration in particular is an essential piece, sadly.
deandettloff.bsky.social
Polling agencies like Pew do studies to determine voter demographics. There is also a racial factor here in the US, though there's been a lot of discourse about "the Latino vote," which is an even more dubious category in my opinion, but it's a talking point.

White Protestants and Catholics support Trump, but voters in other U.S. religious groups prefer Harris
Among White evangelicals, support for Trump is higher among those who attend church regularly than among those who don’t.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

If Portland’s blow up animals are the right language for Portland, this is the right language for Chicago.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”
deandettloff.bsky.social
A majority of Catholic voters chose this outcome. The Church in the US will need much bolder leadership to meet this moment. This is an encouraging sign that that's possible.
