Email your MP (again) to ask them to tell the government (again) that they need to pull their finger our and protect forests at COP30.
I've been at WWF 5.5 years and I can't believe I've had to run basically the same e-action every year.
Help me make it the last time!

A chance to protect our precious forests
Tell your MP that the UK government must seize the moment to protect forests at COP30.

Just re-reading Kemi Badenoch's Conference speech, and isn't this bit just a bit funny? It's really not clear what the policy is on climate action - do they want to scrap the CCC? Carbon budgeting in general? or just Net Zero in particular? These lines are just slogans with no actions attached.

We're putting more money into destroying forests than protecting them.

We are losing our precious ecosystems for short-term financial gains.

This needs to stop. It's time our world leaders step up, and what better time to do it than #COP30 in Brazil.

This news is a tragedy for nature, and for all the people that rely on coral reefs.

But this report should also be a reminder of how much MORE we stand to lose if we don't act now. 🌳🌊🌍

We cannot afford to let the #ClimateCrisis escalate further.
Key climate tipping point is BREACHED for the first time
With global warming on track to climb past 1.5°C (2.7°F), scientists say that warm water coral reefs are now passing their thermal tipping point.

Food security for the UK can only ever mean anything if it includes imports, and that means imports of things we can’t grow, and, to a lesser extent, things we can grow - like Bread Wheat. Bread wheat depends so much on right weather conditions. Which, as the climate shifts, is becoming a Lottery.

And this, class, is why aiming at agricultural self-sufficiency rather than spreading risk across different countries through international trade is a *really stupid idea*.
davidwalsh16.bsky.social
I agree with Mike. Not just because the science matters, but because politically it is foolish not to be open about the climate inflation that is increasingly baked in to our food system.

Inflation brings down governments. If you're not honest today about the causes, you will be blamed in 2029.

Officials in Downing Street have blocked publication of a report warning that the collapse of tropical rainforests could push up food prices in British supermarkets.

Replacing genuinely progressive pragmatic people in No 10 with former Tony Blair advisers isn't going to solve the government's problems. Blairite groupthink didn't (& doesn't) have interest, expertise or answers to properly account for the global challenges of climate change & biodiversity collapse

If we lose it, we lose one of our best defences against climate change. 🌍

At #COP30, the UK government must act to protect forests.

an industry smaller than Onlyfans. Fishing communities deserve protection, but mainly foreign owned industrial trawlers in marine reserves doesn't seem like a growth/nature trade-off that we should be making.

The U.K. government has rejected calls to fully ban bottom trawling in its offshore marine protected areas, despite evidence that the fishing practice tears up seabed habitats and releases large amounts of carbon.

As someone who was at Labour conf, I think this article articulates why I found it so frustrating. If solving the housing crisis was easy - surely we wouldn’t be in the position we are in? We need serious discussions about systems change and a proper housing strategy. Not gimmicky hats.

The broad thrust of Badenoch's speech as far as I can tell is "we'll undo everything Labour has done, and that will be enough to solve all the problems that have accrued because of the Tories. Also, have a magic money tree."

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Yet their ideas are still influential in Labour policy. You've got members of the Adam Smith Institute writing papers with Labour MPs who should know better. Private sector lobbying teams full of former advisers to Tory MPs.
Maybe think critically about if those people share your beliefs & values?

It nags at me that people are dancing around the fact that one reason centre-right think-tanks are in an intellectual crisis moment is because we've spent over a decade where lots of their ideas were tried out and didn't pan out as advertised.

Adam Smith Institute: Tories have a duty to defend property rights, rule of law and capitalism, to allow landowners to do whatever they like.

Robbie Moore: Strong criticism of the Planning Bill for giving NE powers to seize your garden, disregard hope value etc. Bring back controlled burning of uplands.
