Did you ever see Mark Cousin's film with Neneh Cherry: Stockholm My Love? A rather dreamlike piece which I thought beautiful. Lots of Gunnar Asplund in it.

I offered a dissenting voice in this article about "beauty" in #architecture, though little of it got in. Essentially, I can't see why style wars should wang on self-promotingly through a climate emergency.

I put the case here too:

Who should decide what makes a building beautiful?
Everyone agrees that we need more homes, and fast — and that we want them to look good. But who should be the judge: architects, governments or the general public?

Finding journalists hiding in your garden, because your kid's in a movie with someone famous? Insane, but it happens. I'm not surprised they don't read the news. I'm not surprised they didn't yet know.

But that doesn't mean they don't need to learn.

It's news to you? Fine.

But learn more. Now.

How can Knightley/Pegg/Barry/Whomever not know about Rowling? Have they been living under a rock or something?

Basically, I think: yes.

Somebody I grew up around became a bit of a celebrity, and it is INCREDIBLE how much they and their family had to insulate themselves from the world.

Hard to believe that all these people simply had no idea: “Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Snape, Michelle Gomez as McGonagall, Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Simon Pegg as Arthur Weasley, James McAvoy as Mad-Eye Moody, Matt Berry as Sir Cadogan.”

This is a really good discussion by a couple of people who dealt with releasing a book through Unbound as it collapsed. @alicefraser.bsky.social and @chrisskinner.bsky.social are great, Alice's book is fantastic, and it's really unfair this happened to so many great people. youtu.be/8l73x6t27U4?...

Right? By all objective measures it's pretty ridiculous, but I want more.

The southwest façade of North Bridge is on show again!

We can now see the expert hand finished details in all their glory.

Work is continuing to ensure that this unique piece of Edinburgh's history is preserved for future generations.

My secret evil plot to ‘destroy Britain’ has been unveiled by (checks notes) the same paper that endorsed Liz Truss.

If I don’t know better I’d say we’ve got them entirely rattled.

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Today in class we're talking about Robert Johnson. We're starting with the question of why white dudes are so cringe covering his songs. I'm going to argue that it's less about identity and more about the fact that people don't play them well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBLV...

Reminding National Trust members not to turn into a pumpkin - please *use your vote* before the end of the month to support genuine candidates and keep the disingenuous ‘Restore’ stooges away from the Trust’s assets. Easiest way is use ‘Quick Vote’ to endorse official NT AGM recommendations.

Have some Alberti.

This is in the Basilica di Sant'Andrea, in Mantua. Shot about ten years ago, while I was in town working on a project there. Mantua's lovely. I should return one day.
Looking up into the central dome of the Basilica di Sant'Andrea, in Mantua. It looks like an incredibly ornate and richly coloured sculptural interior - fluted columns and capitals and sculptural plaster and coffers everywhere - but actually most of it is just very skilled paintwork.

Facebook memories reminds me that this was a year ago - undoubtedly the greatest political graphic of all time, taken from the 'Conservatism in Crisis' pamphlet released by Kemi Badenoch.
Two equilateral triangles side by side. The one on the left is labeled 20th century politics and is cut in half horizontally, with the smaller top half labeled 'right' and the larger bottom half labeled left. The triangle on the right is cut in half vertically, with the left side labeled right and the right side labeled left - this triangle is captioned 21st century politics.

The Prime Minister just announced plans to change how the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is interpreted by judges

⚠️ A dangerous move that risks weakening everyone's human rights in the UK

So here's a reminder:

Here in Edinburgh, the NASUWT union (& other folk) spoke against the the proposed changes, but since the councillors didn't even get a chance to approve or reject the update from the legal team which brought it, it all came to nothing.

Everyone fuming.
