I've got a new book out! Cult Britannia is a 400-page beast covering hundreds of weird and wonderful world of British horror and science fiction movies from the quaint post-war 1950s through to the end of the post-modern digital 1990s.

Available in paperback and on Kindle here: amzn.eu/d/ghGmoNA
The front cover of a book called Cult Britannia. The title is in large white letters against a Union Jack flag background, where the central red stripes are made from strips of film. The subtitle reads Great British Genre Movies from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Thing is, if you'd pitched exactly this in like 1995, after the live action Flintstones, I'd probably be interested - for the production design if nothing else (Flintstones is a gorgeous showcase for practical sets etc). Who wants to see 63-year-old Carrey as George Jetson though?

2027 - Daredevil: Born Three

Yeah, it's a testament to how ostracised from TV Linehan has become that he doesn't seem to know who Sharpe is. He created an amazing dark comedy in 2016 called Flowers starring Julian Barratt and Olivia Colman, people who would absolutely have been in Linehan's orbit if he wasn't...the way he is.

Another classic of the form, from Stephen Sommers right before he went blockbuster with The Mummy. Great cast - Treat Williams! Famke Janssen! Wes Studi! Djimon Hounsou! Shame the CG monster stuff has aged poorly, but still a blast.

I remember that one near the Arndale - half old games, half old guitars, right?

And if you don't mind a drive in the countryside, the Dagfields antiques emporium in Nantwich had a surprising number of games last time I visited. There's a retro toy shop that has a decent selection, and a few of the stalls have Speccy/C64 stuff tucked away in cabinets.

There used to be one in Afflecks but it was pretty pricey. Retro Rewind in Ashton is really good though. One of the only retro shops I've found that still has 8-bit tapes.

I look forward to Labour responding by adopting more left-wing policies and progressive tax reform and by that I mean calling him names and saying he's being silly and don't worry, we'll still batter the immigrants.
danwhitehead.net
They're going to try and get us to use AI for it, aren't they?
danwhitehead.net
I'm always surprised there aren't more retro games there, although I did find this hidden treasure earlier this year.
danwhitehead.net
I'm constantly amazed by the resilience of some retro games. Found this cassette lying on a shelf in a "vintage emporium". No case, the tape exposed to the elements for the best part of forty years. Still loads perfectly!

"Home Secretary for six brutal years"

That bit's accurate, at least.

Cover of Killtopia Comic Anthology, featuring a despairing man in a tech helmet. The cover to Blister City
In the background in orange and pink tones sits a massive city, behind which orange mountains rise into a dusty orange sky
In the foreground 3 punks perch on the edge of a building, surrounded by litter and soda cans. The punk on the left wears a blue jacket that says die young on the back.

The text Blister City can be seen in the sky above the city. Illustration of Clippy the Paperclip in a Mad Max style truck, blasting through the wasteland; Done for Autonocast.com Photo of a shirt, showing a girl with a nailbat on top of a smashed robot, holding up its severed head. It’s very revealing that the big promise of so-called generative AI is still just “what if two existing things were smushed together?”
